you are very correct discus do need a large tank. and a lot of maintenence. they require more perfect water then any other fresh water fish. If you are getting a nickle sized discus then sure you can keep it in there for a few months but thats about it. LFS wants to sell you a $40+ fish.

it a little larger than the rim/circumfrence of a soda can. he said a couple months.. als ot aht they are part of the cichlid family so they are hardy but people say more pristense because hey are expensive.. im not sure here but.. but hes a pretty good guy. i have bought alot from him. he knows i know what im doing and that he will say no to things when its not good.. he did say a year or 2 it will be okay.
if you do a high light setup, high teck you want low co2 and low light high co2 correct? if you had alot of light and co2 you would have a lot of algae growth?

I have a 25 gallon heavily planted high. I run DIY co2, have 50 watts of regular florescent light, and a few fish. My tank is low tech. I'll try to get a few update shots of the tank.

Its a 2 liter soda bottle with yeast, sugar, and water. The co2 tube goes into a power head where the power head chops the co2 bubbles into micro bubbles. I also add a bit of ferts every week. I've NEVER cleaned the tanks glass for about 4-5 months so far. No algae growth whats so ever. No brow, no green, NOTHING.
