Mycobacterium marinum
http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic281.htm
This is uncommon, but can be a deadly infection for someone who is immunocompromised and/or immunosuppressed (the elderly, HIV+, AIDS, organ transplant recipient, cancer patient receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation, someone receiving rheumatoid arthritis treatments, etc.). If you fit into one or more of these categories, make sure you wear arm length gloves when you perform maintenance on your fish tanks; both freshwater and saltwater. Arm length gloves can be purchased online or locally from your general veterinarian.
This does not exclude otherwise healthy individuals; if you have an open sore or wound on your hand, think twice before performing maintenance on your aquarium barehanded.
:joy:

That's just plain gross
but very informative. I caught something narsty when I cut my finger on an oyster spat 10 or 11 years ago. I also know a guy that had his leg amputated after he cut his ankle on a barnacle :scared: This is why you should excercise great caution when dealing with filter feeders! You never know what's trapped in the lint screen!

Definitely. The "It couldn't happen to me!" attitude is even easier to take on with a hobby. Who would think that something awful could happen to you from messing around in your aquarium?
