When my 200gal. is back up and going, I plan to make my 90gal. a Garden Eel tank...specifically the Splendid Garden Eel (Gorgasia preclara).
You can get away with a 6" - 8" sandbed and look on the bright side...you'd have a hell of a biological filter, with that much sand, plus live rock.

they have a huge reef tank at the Georgia Aquarium with like hundreds of these things. they are real cool, and when a fish comes down they all duck into their burrows, real sweet species....

It's the best tank in the whole GA aquarium, IMO... and small enough that I might actually try to put one like it together one day...
Regardless, Garden Eels are very hard to keep.
