was my FIRST sps, and had grown from two little branches up to about a bocce ball sized clump. Saw it last night with a Yuma moved onto it, and 4 blue legs picking at it. This morning, completely white :( yuma must have stung it to death, and the blue legs chowed, either that or RTN got me good :(

Tis the one thing I dislike about keeping SPS, you never know when RTN is gonna bite you. Sorry to hear Ren.

how does RTN happen? this thing was insanely healthy and a great grower :( it was white at the base i thought cause of the baby yuma, but since the rest died over night i'm thinking RTN

This from wet web media.......
RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis)
"Though sometimes referred to as if it were a disease, RTN is not a disease. It is only what its name implies, rapid tissue death. This is when, for any variety of reasons, a coral's tissue begins to rapidly die off (usually leaving the entire coral dead within a few days if not a few hours). Once it starts, RTN is nearly impossible to stop, especially when the cause is unknown. Sometimes a sudden and drastic shift in tank parameters (such as temperature, salinity, pH, etc...) can cause RTN.
IMMEDIATELY remove any coral you suspect to be suffering from RTN. Though it's not known what causes RTN, it has been shown to spread to other corals. This could be because it is caused by an infectious agent. Or, it could be that when one coral dies so rapidly, a significant amount of toxic chemicals are released into the water causing other corals to start dying (a kind of chain reaction). "
I guess the Yuma laying against it could cause it.

I am currently having an issue with my Birds nest...I HAD 2 yellow clown gobies....1 has disappeared.. (YAY)..LOL...after killing one of my SPS....The other has now decided to "visit" in the branches of my birdsnest....There is no way I can catch the dumb thing....and it sleeps in my rhodactis mushroom...I keep hoping it gets too close to the mouth and the mush eats it..LOL
ANYWAY...I have noticed a couple of white spots of my BN...top of the branches though...I will not buy anymore SPS until this clown goby disappears or I catch it.

Usually the tips of the branches being white is where the growth is happening.
However this is also where "burning" from light happens. As long as the rest of the coral is healthy with good polyp extension just keep an eye on it. SPS grows from the ends, for the most part.

While I have experienced RTN I have never (soud of Henry knocking on wood) had a reef wide occurance. Has seemed to be only one coralcolony.
If I didn't say it before I HATE RTN!!!!
Forgot tho add here, the air conditioner went out while temps were reaching mid 90's here in Michigan. Wife did not turn on any fans and the house got up to 90+- degrees. Needless to say the tank overheated and I lost a pink and a green polyped birdsnest. Kind of fits in with the sudden shift in parameter thing.
