general question, hard and soft corals

I have a mixed tank. :)
I don't know the specifics, but some soft corals release a chemical that stresses out the SPS corals and stunts their growth. Frequent water changes and fresh carbon will help. It's probably a bigger reason than that, but that's what I know.

Many soft corals produce chemicals that effect hard corals. These chemicals are said to slow the growth of hard corals and even possibly causing death.

Yeah, a lot of people refer to it as chemical warfare. I put "warfare" in the search below to find the real name for it but I couldn't. For more info though, you can use that key word.

ok thanks, then I guess one would have to take each coral into consideration, or just pick a side.

I have a handfult of sps, a bunch of lps, and sofites and When I stared adding lps and softies with my sps I only noticed that the acros growth was stunted but monties and millies didn't seem to care much at all. But thats just Ime... I second what viper said about running carbon and water change will help. Ialso keep all my sps along the top and put lps and softies in the middle and bottom.:D

Some of the leather corals will release more toxins than anything else.

I may have to trade mine in.

A toadstool is a leather but I wouldn't trade him in... My toadstool is the size of a 1.5 times the size of a softball at the top and all my sps are still doing fine.. Like said before run carbon and weekly water changes. Also everyones tank is different so just because someone says something doesn't mean you should rush out the lfs to bring something back. Your best of expirementing with your tank and figuring out what it can handle. I'd wouldn't put your leather in front of a powerhead and put sps down current of it because you may run nto problems.:D

Anemones cause problems becuase they often times move around the tank.
When they "wander" they sting things, including your corals (be they SPS, LPS, or softies).
At that point, it is a survival of the fittest issue...ie - whose sting is stronger.
