General Questions for a Newbie

Hi,
I've read and gotten much information from reading alot of your posts. Now I would like to ask some questions of my own and I apologize if some of these questions have already been asked. I find it helpful if I can ask all my questions in one thread.
I setup a 120 gallon reef aquarium about 6 weeks ago. It's a sump system with overflow. I am using a Remora Pro protein skimmer and one Aqua Clear 70 powerhead. I have around 100 lbs of live rock, 50 lbs of lava rock and around 400 lbs of base rock. Over the last few weeks, I have put in 3 Damsels, 30 Turbos, 10 Necarius snails, 3 Bumble Bee snails and a mix variety of crabs (Emeralds, Red and Blue leg crabs, a Queen Conch, ...). So far I have only lost 1 crab and four Turbos.
My chemicals include Instant Ocean, Aragamilk, Amquel for evaporated water, Kent Super Buffer and Cycle. I've been testing the water and the PH stays around 8.3, the ammonia and nitrites are around 0 and the nitrates are around 40 ppm.
My overflow system is located in the back left corner. I am not sure what pump is being used but I seem to get a strong current flowinf left to right. The powerhead is on the right side and is pushing water from right to left and is aimed downwards. It seems that the upper right is not getting much current so I bought a Maxi-Jet 900 and it should be in any day now.
My questions:
1) How do you know when the cycle is complete?
2) Can anyone comment on my water flow setup? I'm not interested in doing a closed system.
3) Are the chemicals I am using any good?
4) Much of the base rock had brown algae and is now turning green. Is this good?
5) When can I begin adding plant life?
5) What plant life should I start with? I want to go with something colorful but cheap and is easy to maintain. I will go with the more expensive stuff later.
That's all for now. I'm sure I will have more questions later.
Thanks.
I wanted to add that I am using crushed coral. I've seen many people here recommend sand but I am not going to replace it now. I am also using Lunar Aqualight Deluxe Series - Double Linear Strip for lighting.

1). When your ammonia and nitrItes read 0 for a week. Then do a 30% water change.
2) Figure out what output all of your pumps, powerheads are. (flow rating). Find out about your return pump, name it and model if possible.
3) It could be the start of coralline algea or an aleae bloom, not sure without a pic.
4) Why do you want to add plant life? (otherwise known as macro algae). Most find it rather invasive to a main tank and instead opt to add it to a refugium instead.
5) I would use chaetomorpha for a macro algae in a refugium. Or did you mean corals instead of plant life?
Trust me, replace that crushed coral, now.

Thanks for the response. Ok, plant life was a bad description. I want to add corals, anemones, clownfish and a flame angel. I know this will take time and I plan to be very patient. I will try to figure out what pump I have tonight. I will also attempt to add a pic.
I forgot to add that I am using a ProClear Aquatics Model 125 Wet Dry Filter. How do you prevent the water from evaporating too much while you are on vacation? There is a water line level that I keep the water up to. I have to replace the evaporated water every few days. I'm worried that I will go on vacation and the water will fall too low cauising the pump to fail.

I'm using a 48" Aqualight 4-65W Straight Pin Base (Coralife) for my lighting. My return pump is an Aqqus surge 6000 with 870 gph. I'm adding two pictures of my current setup. The first picture shows the entire aquarium. I don't like the location of the powerhead on the right but it gives the bottom area a nice current. I bought another power head to use further up. I may have to play aorund with the locations of the powerheads and rocks. The second picture is a base rock that turned brown and now is green. Does this growth look ok? You can also see the rock to it's left is slightly brown with a green tint.

Thats fine, perfectly normal for the base rocks to go through that stage, they may even become even darker green.
Ah, those pics are mighty huge, don't suppose you can try to keep them 500x500 pixels next time could ya?

Simple I don't go on vacations,.....ever.....

Thanks for the reply Thomas. I thought those pics may be a little big. I will work on making them smaller the next time.

Man I gotta take my vacations

The rocks look boring now but once you add corals and coral line grows they are gonna look sick. It will look more natural like a chunk of a reef.

I've always heard volcanic rocks are no bueno for a saltwater tank.
Then, again, if Thomas didn't say anything I'm guessing all is good. Still, just to be on the safe side, look into that.
Also, crushed coral is from the devil.....
Most species of damsels are also from the devil....
Welcome to the boards! Good luck with your tank!

Did I miss something about volcanic rocks? They can be a risk, but entirly possible also.

Can you tell me what can happen with volcanic rock? I searched a little on the net and didn't come up with anything.

just going off of this.. I know sometimes base rock is called "lava" rock, but I would make sure you know what it is composed of.
True volcanic rock could leech metals into your tank.
That's all I know.. I didn't really pay too close attention in Geology (Bio. classes were way more fun)
