General Sixline Behavior

I was thinking about getting a sixline for my reef because they're very beautiful, active, and reef-safe. Does this fish have a reputation of jumping out of the tank because with my MHs, I have to run an open tank to prevent overheating. Can I keep this awesome fish in an open tank? I have plenty of spaces to hide in the LR if it's scared.

Get soem 3/8" pond netting and make a top from that. I have it on my tank with a myster wrasse and a tailspot blenny. So far so good!

That's a good idea, or do what every1 else does. Use eggcrate (light diffuser) from home depot/lowes.

Sounds good. Will this have any negative effect on the lighting? My other worry is that the MHs will melt the eggcrate... is this likely?

IMO eggcrate is light diffuser. I personally don't want my MH diffused. I like the pond netting better. But that is just me.

I have a sixline in my tank and it is a very passive, relaxed fish. I think I got lucky though. A lot of people say they are very territorial. I also have MH lighting and I have a canopy over my tank. no heat issues. I have one fan blowing in and one out and the tank stays at 79-80 degrees. def covers yours though. they jump

The netting is a plastic like material. The frame is from Lowes and is plastic. The screen is held into it by the same spline that you hold window screen in the frame with.

cool. I'll probably have to just cut it to size and lay it on the top because I have the bowfront to account for....

I have a sixline with open top and its never ever thought about jumping. A sixline is the least likely wrasse to jump.

You're lucky. I've heard a few stories of sixlines going carpet surfing and IMO its better to be safe than sorry

Spanko, can you expand on what you mean by diffuser?
As far as the sixline, just watching mine, I'd be concerned about carpet surfing. They are a fast, aerodynamic little fish that could easily get airborne, and it only takes once.

also had a midas blenny which are supposedly jumpers. Mine never thought about jumping either. guess I'm lucky that way. I know wrasses in general jump ALOT. mine doesn't even come up high unless its feeding time. I refuse to put anything on that blocks light or gas exchange. I too have two halides over 30g so I cant afford to anything thats going to trap heat and since I only have 150 watters I dont want anything like egg grates blocking any light. sixlines are cheap, he can jump if he wants to lol.

Ok. When I hear diffuse, I think 'spread'.
So I wouldn't call eggcrate a diffuser. (looks up above head in office).
It prevents diffusion, to a certain extent, by allowing only the light that's heading downward to pass through, and blocking any light headed out towards the sides.
That means it could also reduce the amount of light getting into the tank. Ok, now I understand why it might be avoided.

if you use eggcrate, make sure you put the thick side up. with flourescent bulbs, it will add 25% light, but subtract 10% if the wrong way.
