we have a garmin etrex legend c... it works really well but i think it may be an older model.
good ideas for trinkets include-
small toys (like from kids meals)
keychains, lanyards
pens or pencils
foreign coins
plastic baggies (cache in, trash out)
etc.
other things you can use are things that are unique to you, weve been stashing these little glass blobs that my dad had sandblasted designs onto. some cachers like to do this because when you get a lot of them out there and you become known as a local geocacher, it kind of becomes your calling card.
another cool thing are travelbugs, coins, and tokens. you buy these online and they come with a unique serial number that you register on the website. you can give them a goal, such as, "travel to california within a year" or "visit all 50 states" and then each person that takes it out of a cache reenters it on the site and restashes it. theres also coins that are specific to a soldier that has been killed in the war in iraq/afghanistan, when you enter the coins serial number online you can read about the soldier. i think theyre $6 online, with a minimum order of two.

let us know what you find
BTW... do you have to send word back that you found a "geocache"?
if not that may explain why they weren't there

Thanks for the suggestions but the sad part is, we were 0-3 this morning.

Scott, what was the rating of them....micro?
0 for 3 is unusual unless they are "micro" or either you are using an unreliable gps.
alix...good suggestions on items to leave. May I suggest, leave a note that says "saltwaterfish.com" and have your forum name on it so they can look you up to say, "hey, I found it".

Yep, they were micros. Yesterday afternoon we went out and found 2. One of them was one we could not find yesterday. Considering we literally had NO idea what we were looking for it is no surprise that we could not find anything. The first one is half a mile from my house. I took the pencil that was in there because it needed sharpening. I am going to put it back today and take a troll doll with green hair. The only reason to atke the troll doll is because it is so awesome. I will leave 3 things or so as a replacement.

Alix, THANKS!!!! For telling us about this. We have been geocaching ever since you posted and we now have 80 finds, 3 of our own caches, and 3 (soon to be 4) tavel bugs. We are having a blast doing this. We are also seeing parts of our area that we had never seen before and would never have seen if it were not for geocaching. We absolutely love it!
Thanks again!

Has my smurf moved yet? %%
If I'm reading correctly, somebody has picked it up, yes?

I was kind of tempted to say, What are you talking about? So people would wonder what you have been smoking. talking about a smurf.

You are correct though. We placed it in a cache that we made. It is pretty cool, there is a trail and then a steep drop off along the side of the trail. So I wrapped a container in plastic rope and ran off about 20 feet of rope. I drilled a hole in a branch that had fallen off a tree and ran the rope through the branch. Tied the rope and then threw the cache off the side of the trail. So you are not looking directly for the cache, you are looking for the branch laying on the ground to pull up the cache. The people that found the cache first took all the travel bugs we had in there, they have only placed one of the bugs so far. Which unfortunately is not yours. Oh well in due time.

At least it's on the move...

Sounds like you made a good spot.
