I strongly recommend forgetting about the snorkeling thing if you can do the following: inroll in a quick-hitter scuba diving coarse. Snorkeling will only make you wish you knew how to dive. Diving is so much more relaxing and you see a lot more. There are some cool dives off the island of Isla Mujeres, which is just off the coast of Cancun. Cozumel has good diving too. Of coarse all of these locations have snorkeling. I think that the best diving in North America is by far off the coast of Belize and the Honduran Islands. As far as travel tips- I strongly recommend getting the Lonely Planet Travel Guide to the Yucatan Penninsula, Belize and Guatemala (it's all in one book). It is superior.

P.S. there are great suba coarses IN Mexico for a lot cheaper! Why learn in a swimming pool, when you can learn in the shallows off the edge of a reef (to prevent damage of course!).

I went in cozumel 7 years ago on my honeymoon.
It's great. I remember seeing all kinds of reef fish and I saw a blue spotted flounder in the sand. I wish I bought an underwater camera. I remember a fish picking at my hairy legs, scared the
$&!+ out of me.

AHHHHH, Cozumel, it was great, and we really enjoyed the diving, and even more so, the snorkeling. The snorkeling, only b/c you can do alot more of it without risk. even on the day of departure.
We saw some rays, cuda(one was over 6 ft long), yellowtail snappers, lots of fish i can't even remember or name, even if i could. some puffers, Angels, The possiblities are almost endless, depending on wher you dive.
And yes, listen to the advice given, take a resort couse and try diving, IT IS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE, that you will never forget.
Ther are alos a couple of places that you can swim with dolphins in the wild too.
Wher you going in Mexico, anyhow. Many of us may be able to give lots of good advice, but region would make a difference in some of the tips and trips we offer.
1) leave the wildlife alone(evne the iguanas, they carry salmonila)
2)use the safe
3) If you are not in cozumel, be sure you are aware of wher eyou are at, the locals can be questionable in some areas. In cozumel, you can literally walk around with your money hanging out of your pocket without worries.
4) Go on at least one Myan Ruin tour, it is an experience yo will never forget as well
5)Do not get caught bringing back cuban cigars
6)NEVER, EVER tell the waiter you like hot food!!!!
Ours taught me a lesson I would never forget,(it was the BEST salsa i ever ate, but I hurt for the next 2 days and boy did it burn!!)
7)Be sure you know the local laws, taking things from the beaches in some areas s fine, but in others is quite illegal
8)If you fish, take a trip, althoguh expensive, IT IS worth every dime
9)if you do, do not eat the barracuda(highly toxic, even thought the locals will eat it)
10)If you drink , do not expec t to find budweiser, you will only find DOS EQUIS and CORONA in most areas
11)photo copy your pasports or birth certificates
keep one copy accessible, and another give to someone you can trust back home,a nd keep the original in the safe at the hotel room. JUST in case you ever need it
12)Whenever possible, use a card, instead of carrying alot of cash, PLUS you get the added benefit of the best and most current exchange rate(instead of their rounded down rate, remember, they do not have to take our money at all, so they cna charge us however they want, even dollar for peso even thogh they would not go that far)
13)Get a window seat, so you can watch out the window over the carribean, esp on descent, it is Quite beautiful and the water is sooooooooooo clear
14) do not forget sunblock
15)Only dirink bottled products, esp water
16)Watch your film, you are only supposed to take like 8 rolls with you ro something
17) go get an underwater camera, MINOLTA makes a nice one for about $60 or $80 or less that is good for about 25 feet. If you do not, you will regret it, esp once you go to buy a disposable underwater for almost half that
19)Leave home here, you do not want to worry about anything while away.
19A) take a resume, lol, you may want to stay(i did, and wish I had stayed)
20)If you have medical needs, check with your doctor and the travel agaent about laws, even thoguh we expect to be able to take tylenol with us, customs canget tricky at times, so if you do not NEED it, leave it here and buy it there(and what you NEED beyond all doubt, make sure it is fine to take it along)
21)ENJOY, ENJOY

another thing, when diving
leave all jewelry including watches and rings in the safe
You do not want flashy objects in the water, yuou never know who you will encounter, cuda or eels or whatnot and most problems stem form misinformed divers
and if you do a beach dive, listen carefully to instruction, these guys know their jobs.
Our guide took a crew out before us and found a water snake(highly venomous, and they were all glad they remembered what he told them about his hand siglnals)

Our location is at a resort on the The Mayan Riviera.

Flyinbryan,
Where are you staying on the Mayan Riviera? I went there on my honeymoon earlier this summer, and stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar. Great place! While we were there, my wife and I went on a few snorkeling trips (I couldn't convince her to go diving) and saw some fascinating reef life, and the biggest sponges I've ever seen. We also went cavern snorkeling and swam in several cenotes on one of the trips; now that was amazing! We took an excursion called the Jungle Crossing, which combined a ride on a WWII German surplus military transport through the jungle to the cavern that we snorkeled in, and then dropped us off for the afternoon on the reef, where we kayaked in from the beach. Then we headed to a local ranch where we were fed chicken and iguana; be forewarned, stay away from jabenero peppers-much hotter than jalepeno peppers. We also got to play with the pet monkeys at the ranch. The Mayan penninsula is a wonderful place.

Ditto on the diving over snorkling.
On our last trip to Cozumel we snorkled due to wife not wanting to dive. It was ok, but once you dive that is all you want to do.
While we were snorkling, I was the only one in the group that could swim down to the bottom. Needless to say I was then dubbed the camera guy. Everyone wanted me to take thier cameras down for pics of the fish. It was about 20 to 25 feet deep.
Now when I was in the Navy, I did a lot of diving in the islands and also got to dive the Red Sea.
One great dive was at Guantanemo Bay, Cuba. We came across some old army tanks and vehicles, plus came across a big cuda on the way back to the pier. I fished a pier that we were moored at and caught trigger fish after trigger fish. They sure can fight.
Enjoy you vacation down there!

i believe you arein the same general area as cozumel(but ont he mainland)
if it is still availabe, we took a trip to the mayan ruins(Tulum, not chichinitza) and XEL HA, it was great, IMO
Xel Ha is a very large, natuaral aquarium, over a mile long, and you can snorkel the whole thing. I t was only like 55$ each and well worhth it. Chichinitza is nice, but more expensive and you don't go to Xel Ha too, but another great trip.
Sorry my above post was so long, but I grew up traveling and have been to mexico a couple of times and love it, esp the cozumel, puerta aventura and cancun area(you are not far south of ther.
As for cameras, we have a minolta gx-4, it is a great snorkeling camera and good for shallow diving(deep water cameraas are very costly) up to 15 feet, whichis great for what I do, and inexpensive.
Now, as for the 8 rolls of film, believe it or not, it is in the customs claims, chances are that you will not have to worry about it, but I live by murphys law. Now, you can give 8 to yourself, and your wife and children(just package in seperate luggage) ;) And even if you did get questioned and have to claim it, I am pretty sure they willnot say anything about a family having a little extra film, it is just the hasle and I dislike customs hassles even though they are often only questions.
PS, another good travel trip, make sure well in advance that you have your ID ready, passports take 2 months to get back, and birth certificates can be gotten sooner, but I dislike pushing things back on a trip like that.(Either form is sufficient for Mexico)

i dove the reefs of cancun last summer, and totally loved it. took diving as a gym class at the university so i didnt have to take the resort class, kinda nice, cause i fillded around in the fore reef area while my gf and her dad took the resort class. it was great. we swam with a school of liek 20-30 gigantic french angels! it was very gorgeous. saw a cuda that was easily 6 foot and had beady eyes, and almost fought with a trigger. im not sure what kind but it looked very familiar to an undulated trigger. i still havent found out what kind he was. it was fantastic though. hope to one day make it to the indopacific, and see all the cool stuff there as well!
if you cna get an underwater cam, get it, you wont regret it. i brought a disp underwater cam and it didnt do anyhtign below 15 feet. it sucked.
anyhow, take lots of pics and have fun!
good luck
jon
