And this is not the exception, but pretty standard. Salinity that off can be lethal to marine life.

FWIW fish wont die in salinity levels @ 1.032. What would kill them is the jump to 1.032 from a lower salinity in a very short period of time. eg. if you purchased a fish from a LFS whos salintiy was 1.020 and you acclimated for an hour and a half to your 1.032 this could definatly cause enough stress to kill a fish.
Actually, this was before I learned of drip acclimating and only temp acclimated for ~45 minutes. Thus going from probably 1.020 to 1.032 in a matter of seconds. Pure torture and of course now I feel bad..

This post pushed me to get a refractometer too. Here's what mine said:
Hydrometer said 1.025SG.
Refractometer said 1.030SG

When you test with your new refractometers.. did you happen to calibrate it first? This may be why it looks like a steep jump from your hydrometer. If you did.. then

Yeah, I did calibrate it. Well actually I tested it with RO water and it showed 0 so no adjustment necessary.

Quick question too, how many people test the salinity of their LFS water before they acclimate their fish? I actually never have although I know my LFS keeps their salinity at 1.020 and mine is at 1.025 that IMO is a big jump for only an hour and a half of acclimation.
I actually do. I read a post a couple years ago from my LFS that said they keep their Fish tanks @ 1.01_ (can't remember what the last digit was). That made me paranoid, so now I test the water the fish came in.
Oh, and BTW, the rumor wasn't even true. The sg was in the range I would expect it, 1.023 I think.
