Not much more work. They already track, collect and pay sales tax for items bought in states where they have a physical presence, just a matter of changing the software.
I'd guess 70%+ of all internet sales come from companies that don't have a physical store in any state. Just look at all the EBay "businesses" for that average. Probably 90% of EBay sellers don't collect taxes on their sales (I know I never did). Like I said, I never knew any law existed in Texas, and I imagine it's the same thing for the multitude of internet shoppers nationwide. Regardless if the software can be modified, it would be an accounting nightmare for a business that would have to keep track of 50 different tax rates, and have to deal with paying 50 different states their "fair share" of taxes.

Wow, was not expecting that out of you, flower!
LOL...That's because I'm shaking in my boots. I spend almost all of my money on internet purchases. I shop on-line at e-bay, Fish stores, and overstock.com, just to name a few. It began because I couldn't find what I wanted in the store and now I'm disabled and I can't walk much, and I love to shop...I live on my computer.
If something breaks I get on the internet to find the part. I even purchased Jellybean as an egg...on-line. I found Atticus...on-line. I had to pick up the critter from the airport. The amount of stuff I buy.... the very thought of having to pay 3 years and interest on taxes, is overwhelming. They would have to lock me up for tax evasion, or in paupers prison because I won't be able to pay.

The business has to have a warehouse somewhere. I bought a Dell computer online and had to pay sales tax. Last I knew Dell is based in Texas but because they have a call center in Co. they had to collect the tax.

I seriously doubt they will spend the resources to try to track down internet purchases. First off it would take a warrant, what would they base it on? You should look into Amazon Prime. Free 2 day shipping on most products. 79 bux a year and it now includes free videos (some paid) so if you do something like Netflix for movies this is a way better deal

I just looked through the last 6 months worth of items I bought from amazon.com (40 so transactions). It looks like items that were purchased directly from amazon are taxed. Items that are bought from sellers that sell through amazon but are not in my state were not taxed and items bought from sellers that sell through amazon and ARE in my state, charged me tax.

Amazon must have a presence in New York. Only thing I've ever been taxed for is electronic books and not even all of them.
