Well I just talked with the friend. His dad is worried it's too much work and not worth it but I convienced him otherwise. Now it is up to conviencing the dad. I showed my buddy the fish he can keep like a pair of clowns or cardinals, and went through different inverts that'd be good.
I told him how little work a 10% water change would be and how little money it will be. There is still hope!

Hey what kind of corals can he keep under those T-5's? Clams? I need everything and anything to convince him!

A 10% water change is only 1 gallon for a 10 gallon tank. I do a 1 gallon water change every week for my 8 gallon bio cube so thats about 15% water change every week, and its SUPER easy to do a 1 gallon water change every week! Good luck trying to convince his dad into saltwater! How many watts are those T-5 lights?

Ok, so 400 bucks max, yes that "skilter filter" = great, I used it on my old quarantine. 10% per week is actually a bit excessive IMO heres a tip, go to wallyworld, pickup one of the powerfilters there, the large kind $20 here , remove the top. Fill the compartments w/ LR, get 2 small 6500k lights+fixtures $20 each, put chaeto above the LR in the chambers. Intstant refuge. This makes for (nearly) maintenance free 10g, and you dont need to do water changes NEARLY as much.

So use the skimmer/filter as filter then get that pump that is shown on the link for a refegium? What size should he use? 10% water change is only 1g a week which doesn't seem bad to me. He would if he did do the 10% get a 5g contaner and buy sw from a lfs and keep it in his room and take out a gallon and put in a gal each weekend. I guess if he get's a refeguim, then maybe that will shorten the water changes to every other week 1g?

Yes
That was my point, make it as easy as possible for him, less waterchanges that you need to do the better IMO. Lower costs in the end too, basically a 10gal bucket of saltwater would last him 10 weeks at 1 waterchange per week, or if he has a refuge, its 1g change every other week, so that 10gal lasts 10 weeks, or 5 months, and at 30 bucks for a bucket of saltwater, that refuge more than covers its cost

Ok. I'm going to talk to him today and hopefuly convince him and his dad. Hey, on my 125g I got two 75g filters. If I remove one and replace it with a refeguim, will that be too little filtration?

Ok well my friend is here on swf.com! His name is Lil' Tanker. I'll teach him to respond and I know he's got lots of questions. I sent him an email to prove to his dad sw is easier than fw.

I don't have room on the back of my tank. That's why I don't have one. Otherwise I would have gotten one a long time ago. I may upgrade to a canister and refiguim, but I want an upgrade soon, so I think I'll most likely stick with weekly water changes.

yeah but its not recommended to keep clams in small tanks because of the fluctuations that occur. things can change so quickly in a small tank

Ya
Well it's up to him, he's the previous poster, say hello everyone,LOL, but I think I'm going to recommend zoos and mushrooms. And colt and bubble, easy corals like that.

i dont think 10% is excessive, i do 20% in a 10 and 28. the 10 is only 2 gallons, its not a huge deal.
i bet hes going to want to upgrade once he gets addicted
