We've got a 34gal red sea max and we ran it for two weeks with substrate and live rock before adding our CUC and frog spawn and torch corals. A week after that we added a perc... and so on. Don't know about adding water from your 90...
At this point 6 weeks later we've got: frog spawn, torch, zoos, leather polyp, another hitchhiker leather we haven't ID'd, one perc, one Lawnmower Blenny, one orchid dottyback, numerous hermit and snails and two cleaner shrimp. Everyone is fat and happy!
Don't know about the biocube lighting but the red sea lighting - according to their website - is good for all kinds... We've just got the softies right now.
I guess, I'm not that much help with the biocube questions... sorry.

You can mod the hood adding a 18 inch 1x96 Watt (Quad-Bulb) Current USA PowerCompact without getting rid of the hood if you want better light and the ability to keep more corals. If you want a link to the build thread PM me...Its on one of those post banning sites. All you have to do other than that is upgrade the fans, but the thread also explains that

dont get an anemone until your tank is settled and you have really good light system. just by having lots of PC wont let you keep any coral. sps require the brightness. if you have 150watt of pc and 150watt metal halide the metal halide is way more brighter!

Just to clarify, I did not mean any coral, just more options, like some lps require more light than others. Corals tend to be happier with more light in general etc. Arent there a few lower light sps that require a little less light than others or am I mistaken?

yea montipora cap. but the color and growth wont be the same as under metal halides.
and mostly all lps could be happy under pcs

although fcatch thread in sps shows good growth on a stylo with the nanotuners upgrade which is like 20+ watts less than the DIY.

cant wait to see it man, post tons of pics i own a biocube 29 also.

thats the link for the upgrade me and fcatch did its a great upgrade lets u hold a lil more coral than the standard lights it comes with, its worth the upgrade but it can b a lil difficult to install but we'll help. it upgrades the 72watt system to 144watts.. bit of advice if your planning to upgrade do not upgrade the fans very loud an annoying unless you dont mind loud fans. i kept my old ones too freakin loud. just the lights nothing else upgraded is worth it

throw the bio balls away. They can produce nitrates. Mine did and I slowly took them out and nitrates vanished. That was the only parameter to give me trouble in my cube.

i got the nanotuner 144w upgrade and my fans are a lot louder than the stock fans. It is a great upgrade kit though.
