getting my first shipment of LR

It will arrive on a Thursday but I do not want to put it in till Friday night. Could I take wet paper towls and drape them over the rock to keep it moist instead of filling a rubbermaid for a day?
Thoughts??

You'll need to cure it before you put it in your tank. If that's what you're talking about, then you should get it in water as soon as possible to keep more stuff from dieing. The longer you wait the more nasty your rock will become and curing will take longer.

Another order coming on Friday that I want to work with at the same time but that is besides the point. Just want to do it all at once.

You could probably use a sprayer filled with saltwater to really moisten the rock and put damp paper towels on it if you absolutely have to wait until Friday to put the rock in a tank.
Like others I say that you should put the rock in as soon as you get it; this lessens the die-off considerably. Why would you pay for live rock if you let iti all die? It will already be out of the water for at least a day (if not more) so the organisms on it need the water to live. I believe that medium-sized crabs can live outside of water for 14-30 hours before they really start to decline. Other animals is less, I'm sure.
You know that you don't have to aquascape anything yet, right? You could have your tank filled Wednesday with sand, put first rock in Thursday, then aquascape Friday. Doing it all at once can be aggrivating.

Sorry didn't realize you were just setting up the tank. Sounds like a good idea to just put the rock in when you get it. Then wait until you get the next shipment to do your aquascaping.

on another thread i read something about uncured rock having a noticeable odor. any experience with that? i will be starting a 65 gal tank in a month or so and plan on using lr/ls when i set it up, i wasnt factoring on an odor. i had to sell my wife on the idea in the first place, the odor may put me and the tank in a dangerous place :). any words of wisdom?

Yeah, buy her a nose clip!!

But seriously, the odor depends on the amount of die off. I recently received 90 lbs of uncured figi LR and it did smell. Not horrendously bad, but a bad odor none the less.

To be honest, uncured rock almost smells rotten. If you can, buy cured rock from a LFS. If not, get rock and cure it in your tank to start your cycle, or you can cure the rock in a bucket (with heater and Powerhead) in another room.
Just reassure your wife that the smell will be gone shortly, and it will be worth it when all is said and done. Try to get your wife interested in the tank. Teach her stuff about the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate cycle, fish, rock, etc. I had to the same with my girlfriend who lives with me. It's kind of like acclimating your girlfriend/wife. lol
