I am about to go out and get a GFCI adapter. I've never even heard of these but was told they are important. Do I just plug the surge protector into the thing?
a gfci adapter such as this one is used to protect an ungrounded system.it protects a individual from a shock due to the water. these are used when there is no ground and are for the upgrade from such electrical systems. perfectly safe to use...

Well I didn't mean it to be unsafe, but...
All my power strips have grounds, all my pumps have grounds, both of my lighting ballasts have grounds. So, that adapter would be usless to me.
