Gfi

Just went to Home Depot and bought a GFCI and power strip bundle by Belkin. I just wanted to make sure before I burnt the house down that this is the correct thing for me to buy. The fact that on the side it says that the GFCI shock protector is a bonus makes me a little leary. I thought I would be on the safe side and check with the experts that I made the correct choice. So did I?

that's probably the same one I use on my big tank. It is fine. Every tank should be plugged into a GFCI.

Wouldn't hurt to have a couple installed separately to your breaker box. A great idea to do.

.. ok a GFI or GFCI same thing i basically a circuit breaker at the outlet. they are required by law within 6 foot of a water source...(new construction) but are highly recommended. if you drop a hair dryer that is plugged into a normal outlet in a bathtub it will pop the circuit in 1-2 seconds...plugged into a GFI...1-2 microseconds.. so they are safer...and they have cool buttons to play with!!!

All GFIs should have a test-button, and ideally integrated into the cord or plug housing in some fashion. If it doesn't have a test, wouldn't touch it.

And some, such as the SHOCK BUSTER brand I got, have cool red lights that I can see glowing (very surreal when looking at them through the sump, an almost unearthly glow) . . . so much fun this hobby is.
