Glass Cover Top or Open

Is it better to close the top using a glass top or just leave it open? I currently have the glass top but I was thinking of taking just the half off for better oxygen transfer. What do you think?

Yeah this biggest issue with glass tops is they will stiffle gas exchange and trap heat. Depending on what your livestock is you can leave the top off or half way, also alot of people use eggcrate for the tops

Yep you beat me to it!

Like you said open is better for many reasons, especially for many of us in the summer for heat dissipation. Out gassing PH stability and other issues come into play too. The ocean does not have a glass lid.
One other issue is the kind of fish, are there tidal pool jumpers like Gobies or Blennies in the tank??? If so "Egg Crating" the top may be needed to stop them from carpet surfing.............

Thanks for all the replies. This forum is really helpful. I only got a couple of clowns, yellow tang and yellowtail damsels. So I think I got no pool jumpers except if one of my clown is Nemo. I didn't know about the PH stability for an open top SWA. There is one small issue and that is the warping of the hood cover. I think I will have to do more poly coating to make the wood more stable or a little bit more moisture resistant. Thanks.

For someone who has a closed canopy with T5 lighting, how would I keep from getting mold on the canopy walls if I took my glass off?

If you add a small fan in the canopy it should keep it dry enough so that mold can not form

I think a fan under the canopy would cause enough evaporation to keep mold from forming.

Slow typing again on my part....... But adding fans is a possibility. The Canopy would be an issue I have not had to deal with. Maybe too coating the ******** of the canopy. One of our carpenter types would know best. Something like a good coat of Marine grade varnish on the inner sides of the Canopy would help too? In 35 years I have never had a tank with a Canopy..... I just do not know........... But I do think glass covers are detrimental in the long run.........

Needed to have the open top plus cover on my tank so I made a pond screen top. 3/8" pond screen with some plastic framing parts from Lowes.

Thanks for the help! I have two aquarium fans that I haven't installed yet. I ask because I had mold grow a year ago before I had my T5s installed. Treating the wood on the ******** is a good idea. I think I will do that and install the fans. Thanks all!

Solid glass tops, backers too! No problems, get evaporation, gas exchange, and areation all down in the sump. Make sure your water free falls somewhere. And sorry to say way less salt up on my lights that way!

I don't use glass tops because about 15% of the energy from your lights is lost in the glass. so if you had a 100 watt light with a glass top on its just about the same as having a 85 watt light on a open aquarium. i myself like to use a screen.
