Yes you will lose not only light intensity but you could also run into heat issues. Evaporation helps cool the water. If you put the lids back on, the heat exchange will drastically become reduced. Also, assuming the lids are glass, they are going to diminish not only the amount but the spectrum as well. Glass tends to reflect a lot of the spectrum. Keep the lids off.

i have never thougth about the reflection of spectrum...since i only run half a top i was never conscerned with heating issues or gas exchange probably the reason i gave him the wrong advice...need to think more clearly of my answers next time
...any suggestions on a good cover to protect the bulbs...and what is the difference between half a top on the tank and a fixture with a glass cover?

The glass covers on the setups are much thinner and are UV protected tinted. They also are not etched as some are. The only thing I can tell you aside from buying the casing, is be careful not to get the bulb wet.

all this time i was trying to save my tank by taking the possiblity of water making the light blow up i been doin it less of a favor....i am going to remove them now and see how the tank responds tomorrow....so if my bulbs blow up tomorrow, you going to restock my tank right??

That's a little on the high side for a 125. What size lights? Tops will cut down on the evaporation, but will cause a bigger problem of temperature. So, it's going to be a decision of "replace water, fans on the surface (or possibly a chiller). But my bet is that your lights are too strong since you are losing 3 gal a day.
