Is it okay to leave a glass top on the tank or will that effect light penatration.. My LFS said that i should take the glass top off ...........I just don't want any of my fish to jump out.

Glass tops will keep the heat in and will limit the gas exchange. To keep the fish in, you can buy some eggcrate at Lowe's or Home Depot and cut it to size.
I had glass tops on for a while but took them off because it made my tank difficult to manage the heat.

i got rid of my glass top also. i didnt have a heat problem but salt creep was getting in the way of light penetration. any spots on the glass will decrease the intensity of the light, so if u want the total spectrum to get to your corals get rid of the glass. i dont use eggcrate but i have two light strips (PC) which only leaves about an inch of open water between them so im not worried about jumping.

It's a rare occasion that a LFS gives good advice, so lemme take in the moment.
Do you even have jumpers? What kinda fish do you have?
If you do have them, then yeah, eggcrates your best option.

I THINK gobies are jumpers. Not sure about yours though.
Standard eggcrate comes in 2X4 ft sheets. Found in the lighting section at home improvement stores.

I wonder if someone at these stores that sell eggcrate would cut it to fit my tank. I have a hex so I would rather have it done right.

It's just plastic and not very strong. A dremel will cut it easily.
I don't think Home Depot or Lowe's will cut anything except PVC anymore.

Anyway, tdog, it's around 10 bucks.

You can even cut it with wire cutters. Its very weak plastic. I did mine a few weeks ago.
Hey Im glad I can at least contribute to a thread at last!!

If you remove the glass top from the tank, doesn't salt creep get on the lights? My lights and reflectors would be covered in salt in a very short time. How is this prevented?
Thanks

When you switch from a glass cover to eggcrate you will experience much greater evaporation. Keep an eye on your salinity also the water level in your tank and sump

You eliminate the source.
Do you have a bubble wall or anything like that in your tank? Or is your surface agitation, just incredible.
