I am setting up a 80gl at my work, but I want to go BARE without sand, but scare of scratching the bottom of my tank or even break. What would be the best thing besides sand to put on the tank.
thanks

cut pvc pipe to 1/2 or 1inch depending on how long u need the pieces, stack your rock on top of the pvc and glue the rock together to keep it from falling over

bare bottom tanks usually use this stuff called starboard on the bottom of the tank. i think its cutting board or something of that nature. you just have to cut it presicely or you can end up with detritus under it and that will caue problems in the long run.
is it going to be an sps tank?

Use maybe 1/4"-3/8" starboard (polyethelene, hdpe). I think in my new tank I am just gonna go w/o anything and paint the underneath side of the tank. Just make sure the rocks are secure if you do that. Right now I have 3/8" hdpe. It's nice, but be sure to silicon it down and around the edges so crud can't accumulate.

I just wanted to try without sand and see how it looks. But if it gets too hard, I will just do with sand....

To me having a bare bottom is not a pleasing site. It's as bad as adding fake corals or fake plastic plants or sunken ships etc. Thats not what the ocean bed looks like in nature. To each his own.

Agreed, even though it is easy to clean up, I think a tank with no sand is like a sandwhich with no bread.
