Just puchaced a golden headed sleeper.
It takes the sand 1/2 way up my tank then sifts.
My powerheads do the rest to cover everything up with sand. It is covering everything!
Will this continue?

I have a dragon goby and he does the same thing. It really pisses me off when he covers my open brain with sand. Mine has been doing it for about a month now and he doesn't show any signs of stopping. They are great cleaners and fun to watch but man the sand stuff gets old. :)

Yes this will continue. Unfortunately, that is part of their nature. They eat the critters that make your live sand live. Depending on the size of your tank, they could "kill" a lsb very quickly. --Bob

Thanks for the replys.
It could kill my lsb? I have a 100g w/ a 4"dsb.
It's been set up for almost 2 years now.
My question now is: is it a good thing to have or not?!

I have never heard of a sand sifter killing your DSB, I always believed they were good detritus cleaners and good at removing algea and cyanobacteria from the sand surface. If you have a real DSB how could they eat deep enough to kill off the sand bed. Mine only eats down about a half inch.

But they don't only eat detritus and none of mine ever ate algae or cyano off the sands surface, ther're supposed to keep the bed stirred up though and in a large enough tank along with supplemental feedings of some other aquarist introduced they suld affect the sand bed to adversely! ;)

they eat the micro fauna out of the sb but with a dsb the only supposed to mix up the top layer so it shouldnt be a problem, for cleaning anything off that if covers with sand you could use a turkey baster to clean it off with

My bicolor goatfish is doing this now. Very annoying. I don't think he'll be in the 45 long. Have to catch the beautiful, unique fellow tho. If it comes down to it, he/she will meet mr. parrot, and mr. king. <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />
