I was up until 2.00am trying to catch him yesterday with no luck. I will try again but once I catch him he's going back. He was tearing up my sandbed like crazy which isn't good. He is a orange spotted diamond goby BTW.
My LFS should have told my wife he was a jumper, but I guess making money is more important for them. If he would have jumped a little to the left or right he would have been dead because my canopy has air gaps for cooling.
This sucks.
For the record, who would think a sand sifting/shifting goby who spends his life sifting would be flying up the water column like a torpedo? So much for conventional wisdom.

i have the same goby and as of this morning he is also MIA. no overflow for him to get in... so i guess the kitties had a snack. no more gobies for me until i put a cover on.

Your LFS has nothing to do with it, all fish are potential jumpers no one can guarantee a fish will or will not jump. I have seen gobies, firefish, tangs even clowns jump out. It's our responsibility to insure the safety and welfare of our animals not anyone else's IMO. You can cover the top overflows with eggcrate or you can cover your entire tank top with it, that is the best solution if you are worried about jumping fish. BTW most fish jump for a reason, usually aggression from other fish.

Trust me when i say this but the lfs he is refering to, They are interested in the benjamins more than giving good advice or steering you away from a potential prob. I have also experienced this as well at the same lfs. Just make sure you are armed with knowledge when you go in to get somthing.

We have those kinds of LFS around here as well, we just choose to ignore them and focus on the ones who support our reef club

Be glad you found him alive. I found a chromis in the overflow, but before I could get to him, he decided to go on further exploring. Went thru the sump, and back out into the DT as 3 pieces of chum bait

Okay, so my first two attemps of getting numbnuts(my wifes new name for him)out of the overflow were futile, so I busted off the canopy once again and to my suprise he was again MIA. So, I checked the outside of the tank, then I checked the sump. There he was.....mocking me. That dirty rat b$@&#$d!
So, he went up the U-tube, down the line into the filtersock, jumped out of the filtersock into sump, through the baffles into the skimmer section under the Macro algae. So, if your new to this hobby, take this advise, put some freaking egg crate over your overflows.
