WAKE UP CALL: TEXAS GOV. BACKS RESOLUTION AFFIRMING SOVEREIGNTY
Tue Apr 14 2009 08:44:54 ET
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry joined state Rep. Brandon Creighton and sponsors of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 50 in support of states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”
Perry continued: "Millions of Texans are tired of Washington, DC trying to come down here to tell us how to run Texas."

A number of recent federal proposals are not within the scope of the federal government’s constitutionally designated powers and impede the states’ right to govern themselves. HCR 50 affirms that Texas claims sovereignty under the 10th Amendment over all powers not otherwise granted to the federal government.
It also designates that all compulsory federal legislation that requires states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties, or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding, be prohibited or repealed.

I was reading up on this earlier today, I guess there are like 13 states in total getting ready to do something similar as well.

Be absolutely fascinating if it makes it to the supreme court...

My family lives in the Houston area, and I grew up there.

So Perry wants to succede from the Union? I got no problems with that. Can we put walls up around the perimeter to keep the Snowbirds out as well as the Mexicans? It is kind of hypocritical though. Didn't he just take a few billion of the bailout money for the State? I recall some of it was coming to San Antonio to pay for some of these roads they're trying to toll.

I fail to see how promoting states rights, is in support of secession. But I guess what could I expect coming from you. Let the snow birds in. They have lots of money and spend it here...

Sorry. Misinterpreted what he was complaining about. Thought these one-liners from the liberal left were kind of funny:
"States' rights" is usually just code for "racism," but in Rick Perry's case he is just mad as hell about how he is being forced to spend billions of dollar in federal stimulus money in ways the federal government demands, rather than just blowing it on bribing Rush Limbaugh to move to Austin or whatever.
If Texas actually becomes a legal underaged .10 blood-alcohol content spliff-smoking 100-mph libertarian autobahn paradise we will take Perry at his word, that he is concerned about the constitution and not just looking to aid his reelection bid by going hard-line anti-feds making him help poor people. Also if all that happens we might just move there! Who doesn't love getting wasted and speeding with high school seniors?
The Snowbirds might bring money, but they clog the highways up with their slow moving RV's...

I've dealt with snow birds, sun birds and turd birds everywhere I've lived. They are a pain in the butt that does bring a whole lot of money into the economy.
Always amazed me how some old fart in a 60 foot motor home thinks it OK to stop in the middle of a 2 lane highway around Flathead lake to price check the cherry stands. Even more amazing that they will block traffic both directions with the wife standing in the middle of the road to direct him so they can turn around to go back to the first cherry stand because the price was a little better. I stood at a payphone waiting to talk to the boss and watch it happen. I was back up there a couple days later and checked, the one stand was 5 cents a pund less than the other for the same cherries. They spent more money in gas than they saved unless they were buying a couple hundred pounds
