Going diving in Great White cage. Need camera recomendation

Hello!
This September I am going diving in a Great White shark cage. The water is sort of murky here (Farallon islands) with about 20 feet visability. I want to take photos while underwater, but I cant afford a 1000$ underwater camera. What are some good recomendations for underwater cameras that wont break my bankroll??
Thanks in advance!

It sounds kinda stupid, but the underwater disposables can take some decent underwater pics. But there are other options as well. I know that the Canon S- series has an underwater housing available, and the digicams start off rather inexpensive. I think that an s-30 is close to 300 bucks. Its a nice digital too. (IMO) I am sure Ryebread will have some more info.
You could also look into renting one. I bet that the charter has something that they could work out for you.

The cheapest that you'll be able to get, in digital, is about 700 or so. The housing's costs as much, if not more, than the cameras. I would look into renting a setup. If the charter doesn't have anything available, check out the local dive shops. There's a really nice place in Monterey that rents just about everything for underwater photo, and video. Some buddies of mine have been talking about trying out the cage diving in the farallon's. If you don't mind me asking how much is the trip going to set you back?

Its OK :)
The trip (one full day) is about 800$, not including wet suit rental, weight belt, etc....
Its a bit much, but it has been a dream of mine for years now!!!

Would be nice to see some pics when your done. On another note the water there is really cold. I don't think i'd dive there without a dry suit myself.

You would think that someone would have invented a cheap waterproof plastic baggie type of thing with a glass lens that you could just put on a regular camera......I don't mean a ziplock bag or anything, but something very reliable and waterproof......It doesn't seem that hard....is there a reason these don't exist?

They do make the cheap plastic bag type's, but they are prone to leaking, and make it difficult to work the controls on the camera. Plus there only rated for shallow depth.

When we bought our sony, it came with a booklet of stuff you can buy for it, one of the things we we're really interested in was a hard case that you put the camera in for underwater photo taking. It was priced I think at 150.00 also. It's not soposed to leak. I hope you find something, I would love to see some photos of that....Lisa

Thanks for all the help :)
Im going in Late sept., so if I get any good shots, Ill post them here first :)
I hope one come really close to the cage and does that thing where they "taste" it gently.... that would be incedable!!!

The nice thing is you'll be wearing a wetsuit, so no one will notice if you have an accident.;)
BLUEBERRYBOOMER,
The cheapest that I've seen the sony housing for is $250. One of my dive buddies has the setup, and it works really well.

Sea-Pro is a really good camera and they are not bad, they also sell other screw on close up lens. I am a photographer and my brother is the big diver nut..and that is what i bought him. Yuo can go to wolf camera and ask them..you will have to order it.
hope that helps. and I hope you have a good trip...we better see pics when you return!:)

I've tried that camera before, and wasn't all that impressed. I think you'll find with most average underwater 35 camera's is that you need to be at least within a few feet to snap a good pic. You'd probably also want something with an external flash.

uhhhh I can think of one word to that......AMEN. Dude croc hunter that sounds like fun....take it from somebody who has been in the water from Pacifica all the way to north of Bodega that water is freaking COLD. good luck would love to see some pics.

Ive grown up in the bay area and swam out at Stinson and in the SF Bay.... I must say that "cold" could be considered an understatment ;)
Im looking at renting a 7mm wetsuit for this dive, since Im sure the farallon waters are even colder!!!
