Going diving in Great White cage. Need camera recomendation

Cool.. thanks for the help everyone...
I have one more question.. Do I want a flash?? The water at the farallons only has about 20 feet visability, and I worry that a flash will just reflect off of the free flowing particles in the water.. like when you turn your high beams on in the fog.....

If you get the external flah it should be O.K. If you have the flash attached to the camera, then it will probably reflect the particals, and the pic wont be very good.

This may sound a bit ignorant, since I am new to underwater photography, but why would a built in flash reflect particles, and an external flash not??
Dont they both do essentially the same thing??

This is what I was told about using the strobe, and avoiding backscatter.
Starting out, you'll probably find it best to attach your strobe to the camera on a bracket. Ideally, you should be able to position the strobe so that it's off to the side and aimed at your subject from a 45 degree angle. Alternatively, if you have a very wide angle strobe, you put it off to the side and aim it straight ahead.
These positions help eliminate backscatter, which is haze and glare caused by suspended particles reflecting the flash back into the camera lens. To avoid backscatter, try to light your subject while not lighting the water between your camera and the subject.

i wouldnt get get a digital and buy the underwater housing. that way you could have good pics and still use the camera else where. the cameras in the sea and sea are not that great and for around the same price you can get a nice digital.jmho

Well my G3 should be here tomorrow YIPPPPEEEEE!!!. So I was looking for some information on the battery to see if I could use it right away or have to wait for it to charge. I do.:( But anyway I found this site. http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/5can_g3.html I know nothing about it or their products. Just passing along some information. I also don't know how well the G3 works under water. BTW someone on this site set me up with a deal. If you want you can e-mail me and I will tell you who it is. skschneider@adelphia.net

Digital is okay, but they are not as responive to moving objects. And casing cameras are not that great, they will leak over time. But good luck.
