GOING FROM 75g TO 180g QUESTIONS?

ok i now have a 75g DT and a 55g basement sump/fug and im going to a 180g drilled overflow tank AGA
i will have more questions as i go along because this is a big step for me

i pretty much know what i need to get this done but not all so any help will help alot!
so far ive built my stand for the new basement sump 125g and over the weekend ive bought the 125 tank and im getting my baffles cut just waiting on the call to go and get them
i9ve ordered my t5 x6 39watt=234 watt 36" light system for it for my fraging/ chaeto areas should be plenty
im going to start from the basement up but like i said this will take awhile "wish i was but im not made of money" lol

anyways my 1st question is this i dont want to start another cycle so is it better to get my sand not live for the 180 and use my current live sand to seed my 180 on top of the non live sand?

this is going to be my 125 sump

1st part frag area 28g, 2nd part macro algae area 19g, 3rd part return pump area 10g and 4th part protein skimmer area/ reactor area 21g

Im going through a similar thing now.75 to 125 however I'm going to reuse my sand.I have a shallow sand bed in my 75 and will transfer that to the 125 when its ready along with some new sand.I will not be putting any of my livestock into the new tank until the tank goes through its mini cycle if it does at all.I just plan on monitoring it for a few days and see what happens.
Good luck on the new build .

there should be a mini cycle but if you are careful enough and also keep the old water. i don't think there would cost any major problem. i change from 20 to 30 to 55 to 95 within 2 year period without any major loss due to switch over.
1. move all coral into one container with old water
2. fill new tank with old water 10% full
3. fill new tank with old sand
4. let the sand settle for few hours, in the meantime you can start moving the rock and fish into another contain with 50% old water and 50% new water
5. once the sand is settle in the new tank, slowly add old water, try not to disturb the sand too much
6. add rock, do your landscaping, fill water, wait..wait..wait..until water is clear
there should not be a major cycle ... but still would be some no matter what

thanks for everyones input

i want to reuse my existing substrate because it is totally full of micro life!
and that is what i was thinking about seeding it because so far with the GRUNG which is very good by the way i have about 90 lbs LS in my 75 right now and i im going to get 150 more lbs of non live aragonite so thats around 240 lbs lbs LS
i was really hoping to transfer everything over in the 180 that same day when i set the tank up but if it might start a mini cycle i wont thanks for the info

you should be fine if you do it over the course of 1.5 days. you can siphon your sand out slowly and let it sit a while, you can cover over it with the new sand you got and let it sit. if you put enough water it the water, you can run a powerhead or two

well after $130 for glass and two extra trips to the glass place because they had 2 sheets wider then 17 1/4" i took them back the 1st time and he said they were ok and still had one to wide again so i took it back and made sure it was the right width before i left they were all looking @ me like i lost it when i told them what it was for HILARIOUS!

not a lot of people get why we like this stuff and don't realize just how addictive it can be
OW WELL THEIR LOSS

anyways its done what do you all think?

ok
if any1 is checking out this thread i need help on heater choices for my new sump and current DT which is around around 160 gallons all together usable gallons
got any ideas on some good heaters i was thinking either a 800 watt titanium or should i put like 3- 300 watt heaters together and go like that
ive found some 800-1000 watt heaters by WONS bros. and AQUAMEDIC
does anyone know about A.M. ones
because ive been reading up on the won bros. 1's and they dont seem to last long

I'd use (3) 250W heaters, or (4) 200W heaters. It's safer than using one large one.
I use Jager heaters myself and have never had a problem. Lots of people here like the Visi Therm heaters also.
