We've had our 75 gal/8 fish only tank for about 6 mths. What do we need to know about getting our tank ready for while we are gone?

silverado they do sell automatic fish feeders. get your fish on dry food befor you leav and hire the neighborhood kid to come in and check on them for you and re fill the feeder if needed.

If you're gone less than two weeks don't feed the fish. The major maintenance needed is topoff to prevent salinity from rising too much or sump level getting too low. If you don't have an auto topoff then you may need someone to come in and topoff for you. I personally wouldn't trust anyone to feed the tank unless they are a fish keeper. Most people naturally overfeed and that will result in water issues so it's safer to not feed anything.

Whew! I already have an ATO planned for the system and plan on trying to raise copepods on my fuge, so I hope I'm good.

i agree with that but not if you have a predator tank, they get mean when they get hungry but thats only for preditor fish. what type of fish do you have in your tank silverado? my eel ate 4 of my fish in one week imagen what he would have done in two.

I don't have one set up right now. I had a 36g in Waukegan but I tore it down when I moved to Gurnee 8 months ago and started building the stand for my 72g. I hope to have it up and running in 2-3 months. I had inverts in the 36g (Snails, crabs and urchins), I plan on having even more inverts (Snails, crabs, urchins, shrimp and a spiney lobster) with a couple of fish and some corals in the 72g. I'm making an up-flow algae scrubber for the sump which I'm going to use to breed copepods for the fish. Also to feed, I'm going to use homemade frozen for the fish and corals and toss in a table shrimp for the lobster.

Oh god! The wife and I are going to Hawaii next April for two weeks. What to do? What to do?

You know you can always leave a key with me...I can feed your fish. All it will cost you is some gas money to drive to your house each day...

Which by the way Huma....that's your solution as well, have friend keep an eye on your tank while you are gone...You just need a fish sitter

I might just take you up on that but I'd still need someone to change the top off container.

Hi,

For vacation time...you get a bigger tub so it lasts, and you put it on the same floor so I won't need to climb stairs. If a big tub has to be set right in the living room next to the tank...it won't matter if it looks ugly for a few weeks, you and your wife will be gone anyway... I can do more then feed your critters, I can top off, and if you do a water change before you go, it won't be necessary for me to do a water change. I can do a water change if something goes wrong...it may take me longer then normal, and I can't claim it wouldn't be difficult... but in an emergency I could do it.

Actualy (and I've been thinking a lot about this) I've got a 40g sump sitting in the shed that I'm not using. I'll leak test it and if it holds, I'll just set it next the stand. The ATO line should be long enough to reach it. And I'll still leave a 5g bucket inside the stand and a couple more outside next to the sump. That should make it easy for ya. I should know by then if I'll even need the buckets. SOLD!!! Thanks!

LOL...I know you consider me a friend if you trust me with your fish and tank... Don't forget to pray for my health so I can be there for you when you need me. I so appreciate all the help you have been to me.
