in june i bought 55 snails to go into my 55 gallon tank and 10 hemit crabs with 20 empty shells. one cleaner shrimp, one fire shrimp, and one black cucumber. today i have 5 crabs and 6 snails, and my black cucumber. so im going to restock my clean up crew. im thinking about buying 10 Nassarius Snail, 10 Cerith Snail, 30 Turbo Snail, 2 Cleaner Shrimp, and 5 Peppermint Shrimp, and 3 Mexican Turbo Snail. plus i also plan to give the remaining hemit crabs away. is that a big enough clean up crew.

Why in the world do you think that you need that much in a 55? The Mexican and turbo snails will die with no natural food to eat.

.........maybe because CUCs are so over-marketed?

if nassarius snails are the ones that live under the sand the DONT GET THEM. tHESE snails are carniverous. when ever a turbo or other algae eating snail fell in the sand, the nassarius snails would eat them, leaving empty shells all over the sand. for sand cleaning, get sand sifting stars. 1)they wont eat fallen snails alive. 2) they are way more attractive and interesting to watch. 3) and do a better job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hate nassarius snails

I am sorry to say that sand sifting stars are not good in captivity. They outgrow even very large home aquariums. They do not feed on algae and detritus. They feed on microorganisms in the tank. They strip the sand bed off all beneficial microorganisms then slowly die of starvation.

I cant say Ive ever seen a Nass snail be carnivorus. Ive had alot in both of my tanks and never once had a problem, they just cruise over anything in there path, including starfish, without taking a bite.
