Yeah, I am planning to go get myself a bubble tip anemone today after school (provided the store got them in last night). I have afew questions, as this is my first anemone in a long long time...
What shall I look for when I pick it out? Is there a big difference between red and green varieties?
Also, once I bring it home, what is the most effective way to acclimate it? Thanks

Well IMO the best way to acclimate is drip for about two hours...
And I think the only difference between the red and the green is the price and what you like the most...
Good luck

A rose bubble tip anemone is more sought after, not often found and is alot more expensive than the common brown BTA's.
You want a specimine that is not bleached, no matter what your LFS tells you there is no such thing as a healthy white anemone. Its mouth should be closed never gaping open, its tenticles should be sticky. If the LFS guy wont let you then ask him to touch its tenticles, they should stick to his hand. Its color may vary but the oral disk and the foot of the animal should be a brown tan, darker is better. Its not a bad thing to have a deflated anemone, as they do this for a few different reasons, but when purchasing one you want to see it inflated and looking happy. If you have a really good relationship with your LFS it may not be a bad idea to ask them to drop a piece of food into it so you can see it eat. A very small piece will do its response time should be rather quick. And dont purchase one that is free floating around the tank.
Typically anemones are shipped with very little water but I would acclimate for about 2 hours. Temp acclimate the bag, then drip acclimate. You should turn off your lights when you do this as it can heat the water up too fast and also raise the pH of the bag water quickly.

Thanks for the advice.... So, event hough the anemone will be acclimating in a different container, I should turn the lights off on the display where the drip is coming from? Or can I wait to turn the lights off until I am ready to add the anemone to the tank?
Also, should I leave the lights off for the rest of the night once I place it in the tank?

No when you temp acclimate you should place the bag in your tank, typically the lights being directly above the animal. This is when I would shut the lights off. When you are drip acclimating you can turn them on.
You need to look at the lighting the animal is comming from vs the lighting you have. If you have more intense lighting it wont be uncommon for the anem to hide out for a bit. And acclimating the anem to the new more intense light is recomended. Just cut your light schedule down a few hours to help it get adjusted. I would keep your tank lights on when you introduce it to your tank. This will IMO Help it find its spot where it enjoys the light.
I also have pictures of all my prefilters that I have on my Power heads. I just forgot to bring my card reader for my camera to work. I will up load them tonight....

sounds like you have gotten great advice. just please make sure to protect you new nem from you PH's before adding it to your tank. it may wander around a bit at first until it finds a place it likes and if you are not prepared for this you may have a giant mess on your hands in no time at all.

Hi Everyone~
Thanks for all the helpful advice... I am leaving here in about 20 minutes to go to my favorite LFS. He has red and green anemones in stock today, not sure which one I will get. The rose ones are twice as much as the green! Anyways, I am going to cover the powerheads up while the anemone is drip acclimating.....
PerfectDark~ Just to clarify....
Let the anemone float in the bag to temperature acclimate (with lights off)
Drip acclimate for two hours (lights can be back on in DT)
Then put the anemone in the tank and leave the lights on so it can figure out where it wants to be....
Sounds good!

Yes and if its not too late get a Rose Bubble tip. Even though they are twice as much, they are one of the most sought after species, and can help fund your tank if it should split. They are also very very beautiful in color. Much more than the greens/browns.
