HOLD ON!
Before visiting Mexico, you may need to get the following vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases you might be at risk for at your destination: (Note: Your doctor or health-care provider will determine what you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, areas of the country you will be visiting, and planned activities.)
To have the most benefit, see a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow time for your vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it.
I NEED VACCINES?! I'm leaving Sunday!

now you know

they really are a good idea - call your doctor ASAP, tell him/her where you're going and ask if there are any over the counter meds they reccomend you bring with you, and also ask you if there's anything you can do in terms of vaccines/prophylactics against parasites - and make sure to mention you're leaving Sunday.
Like everyone else said, do not drink the water. If you must, boil it first for a good 5mins or more at a rolling hard boil. This goes for all water - tapwater, hotel water, restaurant water, everything. Bottled water should be ok, just look on the label to make sure it wasn't bottled in Mexico.
I also second the opinion that you should leave all your jewelry, electronics and valuables in the States. If you're not wearing it, you probably won't get it back... and sometimes even if you are!!
As for your passport, I strongly suggest getting one of those hidden safety zippered pocket things to wear beneath your clothes. They have them at Target and I swear by them when I travel internationally. As was stated, you should have ur passport on you at all times, but it should never be where a pick-pocket could get to it (ie; in a pants/shirt/purse pocket).
Stay safe, be aware of your surroundings, do not, under any circumstances go anywhere by yourself, and have a GREAT time!!!!!

I would not carry your passport with you.
Get a room with a safe and lock your passport in there. Make a copy of the pic page of your passport and carry that with you.
No reason to be nervous, just be aware. Mexico is not as safe as it once was, but Mexican Government understands their lifeblood is tourism for many of these coastal cities. As a result, the law tends to be better represented and enforced in the tourist areas.

I've been to Mexico a few times and I never needed any vaccines. Your staying at a resort, and they are prepared for you as an american.
Most of what's being described here is way down in the "heart" of mexico.
Just have a good time.
And, I can't believe YOUR going diving, lol.

Don't freak out. The CDC lists those vaccinations for almost anywhere you go. Being in a resort area you shouldn't need to worry about to much. Just watch out for bug bites, bring bug spray and don't sleep outdoors.

Oh I remember. And I remember how scared you were and the purpose of the certification, lol.
I had you pegged for never going in the water again if you didn't have to.

Well, I know your gone, but I wanted to point out.
Last time you did this, you left with..."Hopefully, I'll be alive" when this is over,( is what I think you meant anyway)
And now you say, "Talk to y'all when I get back in a week".
Kudos on the leaps of faith there.

I spent 2 weeks in acapulco. I didnt not get vaccines. I stayed in resort that had filtered water, so shower water and ice from there was nothing to worry about. BUT when out just drink everything from a bottle. Coke come in glass bottles from most restaraunts.
Dont carry alot of money with you.
The spanish word or vegetarian is vegetariano. my gf is a vege.
Worry more about the ocean then anything else. Jellys and such.

I'm a little late here, but I didn't see travel insurance listed. Hope she bought some. One of my wife's employees fell and cracked her head open on some tile at a hotel in Cozumel. Hotel was responsible for NOTHING! Quack doctor sewed her up and sent her on her way. Turns out she had a concussion and the docs here in the states had to redo the stitches and treat the infection at the wound. Her travel insurance paid for it all. I work with a guy who lives in TJ. After hearing some of his stories...well, I haven't been back to Mexico. Between the local police (corrupt executioners), the Federalis (corrupt on a grand scale) and the drug cartel (murderering theives) I just can't bring myself to go back.

The resort areas are generally quite safe. The biggest problem encountered by North Americans is from drinking the water, so don't. To be on the safe side, I always bring a bottle of Cipro or Bactrim tablets with me when I travel. I didn't need them in Mexico, but two weeks in Vietnam and I was very glad I had them with me, if you know what I mean?

I just got back a couple months ago, which resort are you staying at?
You have nothing to worry about, just remember this isn't the USA. Your resort will probably have a safe, stick everything in there. When you go out, take only the $$ that you need, then in a separate area of your body put $$ to get a cab ride back to the resort just in case. If you are staying at an all inclusive major resort, you shouldn't have to worry about food water or where to put your toilet paper.
When you are leaving the airport, don't talk to anyone inside the terminal, it is a gauntlet of salesmen that will tell you anything. Find your rep and hop in the car.
Leave your passport in your room safe.
Personally if you are a vegan I wouldn't eat anything off of the resort. The leafy veggies are pretty dirty and raw, need to be cleaned and if they aren't cleaned with bottled or filtered water that will be an issue.
I found that the tours were cheaper with the companies than through the resort, if you can find an american express guy they were really good and offered better service than the jokers from the hotel. Just make sure you have fun.

I just got back yesterday. I had fun, went para-sailing, scuba diving and jet-skiing. I did get sick, but only on the last day of the trip. Our flight there was cancelled so we missed a day of vacation, and our flight back was cancelled. AA is ridiculous, I'm going to write to consumer services.
I have pictures if anyone's interested.
thanks for all the info, I appreciate it!
