Before visiting Mexico, you may need to get the following vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases you might be at risk for at your destination: (Note: Your doctor or health-care provider will determine what you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, areas of the country you will be visiting, and planned activities.)
To have the most benefit, see a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow time for your vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it.
I NEED VACCINES?! I'm leaving Sunday!
now you know
they really are a good idea - call your doctor ASAP, tell him/her where you're going and ask if there are any over the counter meds they reccomend you bring with you, and also ask you if there's anything you can do in terms of vaccines/prophylactics against parasites - and make sure to mention you're leaving Sunday.
Like everyone else said, do not drink the water. If you must, boil it first for a good 5mins or more at a rolling hard boil. This goes for all water - tapwater, hotel water, restaurant water, everything. Bottled water should be ok, just look on the label to make sure it wasn't bottled in Mexico.
I also second the opinion that you should leave all your jewelry, electronics and valuables in the States. If you're not wearing it, you probably won't get it back... and sometimes even if you are!!
As for your passport, I strongly suggest getting one of those hidden safety zippered pocket things to wear beneath your clothes. They have them at Target and I swear by them when I travel internationally. As was stated, you should have ur passport on you at all times, but it should never be where a pick-pocket could get to it (ie; in a pants/shirt/purse pocket).
Stay safe, be aware of your surroundings, do not, under any circumstances go anywhere by yourself, and have a GREAT time!!!!!
