Going to start my first salt aquarium

Hey everybody.
The subject says it all. I've done a little research and I just wanna run a few things by to see if I'm on the right track. My wife and I decided to go the salt route after coming to the realization that we don't want a bunch of fake plants and plastic air actuated doo-dads in a freshwater tank. Plus I think salt tanks are better because of the broad spectrum of things you can do with them.
We have a 55 gal tank that used to be for our snake. We cleaned it real good and filled it with water and let it sit for a few days. No leaks. I've heard that it wouldn't be a good idea to have that glass tank drilled for an overflow, so we'll have to get one that hangs off the back. I plan on doing a sump system, but haven't decided on a refugium yet. What are the benefits/cons to a refuguim? I want to use a good amount of live rock and probably a 4" live sand bed.
I still have no clue what to do when it comes to pumps or if I'll need a skimmer. I do have a question about lighting. If I want to have a few corals, can I get away with a VHO system or do I need Metal Halide? I'm open to all inputs positive or negative (as long as they're not flames). I'm sure I can get some good ideas and education from you guys.
Thanks
Joe

My first recommendation would be to buy a good reef book. There are a couple sold on this site.

To answer your light question - Yep VHO will allow a wide variety of corals but you will be limited. With MH there would be no limit. I suggest 4 X 110 VHO running off an IceCap 660 ballast.
