This is what I have calling a bristle worm. Is this in fact what it is? The other night it was at least 14 inches out of the rock and still had some left inside. My question is what is everyone's opinion on whether I should rid my tank of this ugly creature?

I was at a place call sharks cove today in Sterling Il. They sell bristle worms (if you ask) and the guy helping me showed me one for sale that was about 8" long and had to be about 1 1/2 in around! I had not seen one like this before, it was all gray. Next time I am there I will take a pic if I can.

I has some ugly creep in my tank, JUST got live rock and it was on one of those pieces. Bigarn...right name...ns. Anyway, said it might be a bristleworm and I looked them up and it looked like it. I also read that thread. I got rid of mine....It was just way to disgusting, I couldn't STAND the thought if it being in there. If it was worth $100 bucks I would not have cared, I got it by accident and I flushed it by choice...........YUCK. Good luck with what ever that is, but in my opinion.....JUST PLAIN UGLY!!!!!

I took the picture to my LFS and they said they thought it was a fireworm and that it needs to be removed. Great! Now I have to go on the hunt for this elusive oponent. He is quite crafty.

Many people debate this topic..... but I've heard fireworms and bristleworms are the same critter. This said, I'm confident you have Bristleworms. :D

Hold your horses everybody, or your worms in this case :)
Most people have bristleworms, which are often called fireworms....one of the commonly interchangeable names in this hobby that may not refer to the same beast a scientist may call a fireworm. Historically, in this hobby, bristleworms were very bad. People thought they were infestations that were killing stuff, when in reality they were scavengers that multiplied because tanks were pretty dirty. Now people see bristleworms as beneficial critters to have because they are scavengers. Most everyone with LR will have them. Maybe a couple of inches long, pinkish or red or brown generally with some irridesence. They have bristles - used in locomotion - that can be an irritant if you brush against them - kind of like cactus spines that are really tiny.
Sometimes though someone gets a big old nasty one. And these can be predatory instead of scavengers. They are often not the same species but good luck trying to identify the different species. You would need to be an expert and have a microscope and be a little strange...I know some :) Anyway, these guys are usually these large beasts. So when they are quite large, it is probably best to remove them....but the small guys? I wouldn't. First, you would waste a heck of a lot of time trying, not to mention losing some of the joy of the hobby. And second, they are pretty good critters to have in general.

Maybe this will help "In contrast to the other large beneficial fireworms found in our tanks, one species decidedly presents problems for a reef aquarium. This species, Hermodice carunculata , is a fireworm species commonly found in the Caribbean, although other species in the same genus are found throughout the tropics. It is the only potential "problem" fireworm in aquaria because it eats stony corals and gorgonians in its natural habitat, but may also prey on Indo-Pacific soft corals in the aquarium. As with all fireworms, this species has no jaws to bite off chunks of food, rather it must lick them to death. As the worm lacks the jaws to sever the pieces of its prey, feeding in Hermodice is a prolonged process. When they feed, Hermodice individuals typically swallow the ends of a gorgonian or soft coral and then proceed to lick the flesh off of it, while the ends are still attached to the colony. Such feeding is a lengthy process; it takes hours. During this period the worm really isn't going to go anywhere, it is tethered to its dinner. This species is also an obligate predator of these prey, although it may scavenge a bit, it will not, - in fact, it cannot, - eat other prey. If you have a Hermodice in your tank, you will either eventually find it on a prey organism munching away or see it crawling across the substrate. Remove it with a pair of forceps, tweezers, or tongs, and dispose of it". (http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-04/rs/)

I am very confused on whether this creature is hazardous. I do know that about 2 weeks ago my engineer goby had what looked like whiskers but I have decided that they were bristles from the worm as they were assymetrical on his face and disappeared after a few days. I am going to be turning my FOWLR tank into a reef tank hopefully in the next 6 months and do not want something in there that will be hazardous to my livestock. So after saying this what do you think I should do? Does anyone else want it? I live SW of Atlanta.
