Ok, I am going to start buying things now for when I set up my 75g tank. IF I got 2 175w Metal Halide retro fit kits would this be good on a 75g?? I would also have VHO or other bulbs with it, but would this work??? I can get one right now , here are the specs.:

id say yes it is if and only if you plan on keeping softies, lps, and low light loving sps, such as monti caps, digita's, tri colors... if you are going for the more light loving sps like torts, millipora's then id say go after a 250w set up

That sounds like a great price for an ARO ballast, parabolic reflector, and mogul socket. But like spsaddict suggested, stepping up to 250W would be good for the light loving SPS, clams, and anemones and still allow you to keep softies and LPS.
Though 2x175W will be fine over your 75 for just about anything (other than what's listed above).

Atually, you can keep derasa, squamosa, and giga clams under 2x175 on a 75 gallon. They require less light than croceas and maximas. You can also keep anemones with that lighting.

$145 is an excellent price for the package you described. Stepping up to 250W will allow you to keep just about anything, though you will want to protect corals that require less intensity. Heat will also be more of a problem with the 250's, so you will need to keep the canopy well ventilated and possibly even need a chiller.

pshhht everyone says you can only keep sps under 250w not 175w...thats a bunch of bullsh*t...............you get less heat out put but a little less growth but same color in sps...but the softies and lps will take to it alot better...also if you plan on keeping rics and other harder to keep softies they will love the lower light....and you save the expense of a chiller.......
go with the 175 inless it is going to be all sps
remember color and growth is just as dependent on water quality as light

ok ill bite.... same color ehhh. go get yourself some torts, milliporas, enchiataias.. keeop em under 175w mh, and do under 250w or 400w first off the growth will be minimal and as far as color goes expect hem to dull and color goes ther will be none cuz theere dead from lack of light. id love to see a cali tort under true 175w lighting... ohhh thats right noone in there right mind would do so... why is that... becuase they require ALOT of light... pfffffft is right, learn about sps before you open your mouth....
you aare right water quality is a major issue wiTh sps, but light reqirments are also needed.... that why you wont find sps at the BOTTOM OF AA TRUE REEF AT MORE THAN 100 METERS...wow.. its about thiriving not getting by.....

lol i was waiting for that...check out my tank in this forum.....ego set aside i think i do show the color...and i have a tort and about 3 milliporas in there.............one milipora is actually changed from brown to a purple blue color....
I have talked to many many experienced reefers about if my lighting is enough and most have said yes but i would get a better apperence and growth with 250w.....but i still can keep them thriving..
and knowing about sps.....i have read so many books wich gives me knowledge...but true i do lack the experience but i am readily gaining that....i have had sps in my tank for about 6-7 months and i have not had a single loss

oh and my oldest sps (a blue tipped stag) has grown four 1 1/2 inch branches and the other braches have grown about an inch...and thats in 6 1/2 months........this growth i condsider fairly good and can compare to the growth others have achieved under 250w

What would be a good bulb for this setup?? It will be over a 75g, would it be a good idea to get 2 of these setups, so I will have 2 250watt MH?? Have 1 over the left side of the tank, an have 1 over the right side of the tank, correct? What kind of lighting should I add to this? VHO or PC's an how many watts/ how many bulbs? I would like to be able to keep all softies, Hammers, Clams,.........ect. Any input on this would be great!! Thanks
