There are a lot of great cameras out there and with the prices falling, I personall wouldn't get anything under 5 megapixkels. I'm a fan of the digital SLR camera which can cost you a little more. I went with the Canon Rebel XT because I wanted the option to buy additional lenses though they can set you back more than the camera itself. I like to use steves-digicams.com to get an in depth review on variuos cameras. He are some SLR cameras under $1k.
Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D
Nikon D70s
Canon Digital Rebel XT/350D
Pentax *ist DS2
Olympus E-500 Evolt
Nikon D50

I don't know much about digital camerass either, but my girlfriend is an amazing photgrapher. She is in the middle of starting her photography business, and her play around camera is a Canon Rebel XT. She can take amazing pictures of anything with it, I am trying to get her to take some of my tank because mine just doesn't cut it. But I would highly recommend the Rebel XT based soley on her experiences and the pictures I have seen her take.

Most (unknowing) people shop by mega-pixels. Bad idea. Unless your into having poster sized prints made, then an extremely high mega0pixel camera is not necessary. You should instead be looking at the optical-zoom. I had a very high mega-pixel camera, with a low (3x) optical zoom, and it took sub-par pics...especially close-ups like pics of my tank. Rubbish.
I will take a 5 mega-pixel cam with a 10x optical zoom over an 8 mega-pixel cam with a 3x optical zoom any day of the week.

I agree an optical zoom is essential, not digital zoom. The type of camera depends on your photography skills and your $$$ availability. Honestly if you want to take good pics of nature or aquariums, you might want to check into a better camera with an optional manual focus. I have a kodak easyshare 740 and love it except for taking pics where there is depth. Example if something in your tank is towards the back the camera focuses on the forward stuff (rocks etc.) and your subject will be blurry. Same for photos of birds in trees.

Here is the coolest camera - The Olympus Stylus 720 SW. It hax 7.1 megapixels and the best part is that it is WATERPROOF up to 10 feet and shock proof from a 5 foot drop. Also, Olympus makes a great underwater case for scuba diving.
You can submerge it right into your tank.

Hi, I don't post much but if your looking for a great universal camera the cannon 20D is worth the extra $$. It's 8.2 MP with great optical and total SLR control modes. With the new cannon 30D coming online, the price is down almost 25% less than a few months ago.

Canon makes a great camera. Or you can go with a Sony H2 6.1 meg pix. make sure what ever camera you get. a tri-pod is a must for clean shots!
Image stabalization (sp) is a load of crap when your taking pics of glass with moving water and fish lol
