after my 60 gallon tank has cycled and ive put in my clean up
crew, is it a bad idea to add a porcupine puffer as my first fish?
or should i start with usual damsels or tangs and add a puffer later?

i would put a porcupine puffer way before i would put a tang, that is if your tank is completely cycled. puffers are pretty easy to care for, just remember that they get HUGE and you will need a bigger tank eventually if you plan on keeping it long term.

why don't you try a male molly. It's cheap and will insure you have a system that can support fish. Also a tang should be the last fish added (they are territorial). I have no experience with puffers but have heard they are aggressive.

Hi, I was going to get a puffer until I read about their little teeth and that they can bite holes in your other fish. Please research any puffer before you buy it to make sure that it will get along with any other future fish you with to add to the tank. Lesley

From what I read about puffers, your cleanup crew may become a snack (puffers have teeth designed to crack open shells). This of course would make your algae problem more difficult to control. This is the main reason why I have not gotten a puffer myself. My opinion would be to go for the puffer, but be sure you have a backup plan in case the puffer eats your cleanup crew. Puffers are really cool fish!
