Good plants to keep tank nitrates down?

I am setting up a 20 gallon tank and am thinking of making a sump/refugium.
What would be good plants to grow in it to keep the nitrates etc down? I am thinking of keeping them in the sump so they don't take over my display tank but how much lighting is needed in order for the plant life to thrive? I want to use my current hoods and have some flourescent ones and an incandescent 1.

Great. Cheato seems like a good one. I figure I'll use a skimmer for the pump and fill the bottom tank with cheato while running the two 15 watt incandescents, or could I even go with a 15 watt flourescent hood light? Th'x
