okay 88 is a little high but i do believe the water will fluctuate in the reefs then go back down...not stay there for an extended period of time......in Oct of 2006 the GBR (from a divers log)i know not scientific was consistently recording temps at 86 deg..(30 C) his log is at flamingodivers.com
In Figi the water was consistently between 84- 86 for a period of time then dropping down to 77-79 here is the scientific data for that http://www.naia.com.fj/research/water.html
here's the GBR average monthly temp....i could not find a daily one....but you'll notice how in one part of the year it averages 84 and the lowest is 72....these are averages so the temp most likely swings a few degrees up and down.....http://www.divethereef.com/Guides/SeasonsF.asp

id be curious to know where those temp readings are coming from. The surface, 10ft down, 30 ft down etc? cause i'm sure we all have experainced where the surface is nice and warm, but then our feet are cold

i keep my tank at 76-77 with no problems (knocking on desk)
one thing i do keep an eye on is for ick and other parasites (again, no probs yet, knocking on desk)

yeah i don't know exactly what depth these temps are taken at...i know its not surface temps....i didn't use those because on the radar maps of ocean temps some are cracking 90+ degrees and that's only calcutating about an inch of water
if you guys don't like the info i'm spewing out then research it yourselfs...the GBR is one of the colder reefs of the tropical kind .....many reefs (rocks, corals are in waters only a couple of feet, thriving....you know that water is gonna be a lot warmer than 10 feet down....corals and fish all have different max and min temps for survival and adaptabilty....many have a max threshold of 94 degrees.....many rocks and corals are in low tide areas and get baked by the sun only then back into the water....take what you want from the info but 86 degrees is not all that uncommon for the water temp....
