They do not need an anemone. It is neat to watch the symbiotic relationship that can form between a clown and an anemone. However, there is no guarantee that the clowns will host the anemone.
You probably know this... if you do buy a anemone make sure it's from the Pacific ocean not Atlantic. The Clowns will never attempt any contact with anything from the Atlantic.

That's weird... I had a condy for about a year before it died and the two clowns I have never even got close. I asked the Bio at my supply store and he said they would not touch the condy because it was a A/A. Clowns don't do A/A
