Now when will this little guy get to work? I got him yesterday. He is eating the frozen Marine Cuisine that everyone else eats. But he hasn't even tasted the sand. He isn't swimming much unless he's eating. How long does this guy lay around. Is he nocturnal? He needs to get busy, he's on the clock. Bout to get fired! Thanks for the input!!!

tank is 40 gal been running little over a year. has about 50# LR. There is a clown, 2 damsels, sally lightfoot, small foxface, brittle star, many snails, some corals include colt, mushrooms, christmas tree, xenias, feather duster, etc lotsa black sand to clean! Should be plenty for him to play around with. he has made a little cave already. Any ideas?

Well there is no such thing as a lazy fish. The correct way to say it is conserving energy. But usually yellow watchman gobies are not "lazy." My aunt has one and all it does is take mouthfuls of sand and spit. Maybe getting a pistol shrimp might make the goby move?

Ok, what is the Yellow Watchman Goby's function?
I didn't know they were supposed to be part of a clean up crew?

i don't want to put words into anybodies' mouth, but i believe the thread starter has watchman gobies confused with sandsifting gobies.

So you guys are telling me that the watchman is not a sand sifter. My LFS told me that most gobies were sand sifters. And this was one of them. he talked me out of the diamond goby cause this one looks better. What do i need? Got dirty sand!

a sandsifting goby will get your sand clean, that's for sure. but unless you have 100+ pounds of rock and a fuge, he will probably eventually starve.
as for the dirty subsstrate, you should increase your flow across the bottom of the tank with a powerhead or two.

I have a dragon (still can't find another name of them, both of the LFS labelled it Dragon Goby) goby and he's doing great. But he does eat flake and brine shrimp when i feed everyone else too so he's not going to starve.

my YWG does nothing but guard ALL 6 of his little caves he has made in my tank but i think its cool that he dug out all these little caves and guards them like you wouldnt believe... evertime i walk by the tank he jumps in one of his caves and looks at me

Just get yourself a tiger pistol shrimp - the shrimp will bulldoze the sand around while the goby stands guard
