Gotta love Garlic

I finally tried the "garlic cure" for my singapore angel with ick. Wow, I was very nervous about adding it to my tank, but after 3 days of treatment he looks great. My nitrates did go up to 20 but a small price to pay to rid my baby of ick. I have to reccommend this. It is awesome. This is what I did:
I hand pressed about 10 cloves of fresh garlic then added about 1/4 of a small can of spirulina flakes to the garlic and let it set for about 24 hours then started feeding. he wasn't too sure if he liked it, but he had no choice but eat it, he was hungry. I bought 2 more cleaner shrimp also. They have been ridding him for 2 days and having a ball, and so am I ( watching them) Too cool. Gotta love the Garlic. Very stinky though!!! LOL!!!

Playtime,
Great news! Keep up the regular garlic feedings for about a month so the parasites don't re-attach. They haven't actually died, they've just recoiled because of the repellent qualities of garlic. You'll have to continue feedings to ensure their eggs don't hatch and come back to roost... should be ~ 30 days... I'm sure you already know this ;)
You can also make life a little easier by buying water-suluble estract... i.e. Kyolix from GNC. Some people report their fish love to eat minced garlic by itself!
Good luck!

I have a question about your process...after smashing the garlic cloves, can you add frozen food? Silversides? Bloodworms etc? Or, does it have to be mixed with a dried food? I've never really had a breakout of ich (thank goodness) but I hear this garlic regimen is a good way to go. Thanks!

The flake does turn to mush but if you add a little water to each serving, it is fine. I have dried mixing it with frozen too. They like both.

I had a little ick outbreak about four weeks ago. I placed garlic on the seaweed select and mystic shrimp. I used the oil from garlic capsules, I purchased at a health food store. I used it for about a week, or until all spots were gone. Now I have been given them a garlic feeding once per week. It has not returned. I also have a UV sterilizer. The garlic oil does do a number on my protien skimmer for about 12 hours after feeding. Again, a small price!

I'm trying this on my first ever (pat me on the back guys)ich outbreak. I bought the clove, crushed it up, and man do i smell horrible now. My bicolor angel started eating the garlic itself, as did one of my peppermint shrimp. Not that that really accomplishes much, but it seemed worth noting. I did mix it with some omega1 though, and the clowns got some of it, I think. Do they have to eat this stuff, or can you also try floating it in say a nylon bag or something?

The idea is to get the fish to eat it, thereby enabling them to excrete noxious garlicy oils that repel parasites. I don't believe floating a bag of garlic in you tank will work. I believe the idea is to get the fish to eat the garlic any way you can.
Don't float the bag - Feed the fish. There are lots of good recipes on this board.

I do the exact same thing.. I use GNC garlic capsules just poke a hole in one end and squish the oil onto whatever I am feeding.. and let soak for a few minutes then feed.. But yes.. the skimmer is working overtime ridding the tank of all the oil.. but has proven to be worth it as my Yellow tang no longer has the Ick problem..
