Gravel or Sand

As I posted in another post I bought a new clown and it does not get along with my old ones so I am converting a ten gallon into a saltwater tank for the new clowns. Question is I have gravel in my ten gallon tank. I have 2 ten gallons that had tropical fish and I put all my tropicals in one ten gallon.
Can I leave the gravel in the tank for my clown fish. The only thing I plan putting in the tank is the clown and maybe later on an anemone or something small. My main tank has sand but it stays dirty looking and keeps reddish purple looking algae on it.
Any advice? The clowns have been in my sump for a week now.

I would go with sand. Gravel has no buffering abilities, and I assume it's just FW gravel. Sand itself doesn't just always get dirty. It's a lot easier to keep clean than gravel as detritus doesn't get trapped in with the sand. If you had constant algae problems then something else was wrong; water source or parameters.
Honestly, by the time it takes to set the tank up and cycle it you'd be better off returning the clown.
