Great Dane Puppy

You may already know this but it is important to feed a 'large breed' puppy food. Doing so will improve the chances that he won't develop bone development problems like hip/elbow dysplasia and panosteitis.
Good luck.

you are so right, they do have special requirments and should not be fed high protien food. They must be made to grow very slowly. My mother raised a very beautiful dane and never had any problems with her legs, hips, joints. she was about 150 lbs

What a cute pup! I saw a full grown one that other day, some guy had it tied to his dumpster. I felt so bad for him. They are great dogs, just too big for me. 25 pounds already, wow, how big were the parents? Any pics of them? I want growth pics next to the baby, that would be cute!

Seriously, keep those pics coming! Heck, why not start a Pup Diary? At least as worthy as one of those lousy tank build diaries!

I thought I asked you to stop with the cuteness!
I can not stand it anymore, looking at Mac. Don't tell my baby Goldie, but I am thinking of trading her in for a Dane puppy. Don't know how much I would get for her though, she's used and is 3 years old already.

The only thing that I missed having gotten a young adult shelter dog in 06 was not having an adorable puppy like Mac in the house and watching her grow up. 'course I also missed having to do all the housetraining, all the shots, the spay surgery, the training, etc, etc so maybe I didn't do too bad after all.
Love the puppies! I have never met an ugly one in my life and yours is, well, way cuter than the average pup!

Hope this was not directed at my advice. I may not know a lot about swf but I feel fairly well qualified in veterinary medicine and animal nutrition.
The principle in feeding large breed puppies is to reduce the total caloric intake per cup of food. Large Breed puppy foods are formulated specifically
for large breed puppies. There certainly can be debate about which brand of food is best but there is quite a bit of research about large breed versus medium/small breed puppy food and/or other foods (adult/maintenance/high fiber/low proteins or fat)

yes actually i was talking to you Al Mc. great danes do need less than 25% protein to help them grow as slow as possible to help prevent hip/elbow dysplasia. if you can show me one large breed puppy food, or for that matter any puppy food with less than 25% protein i will most likely use it but until then i have to stick with my vets advice, as well as the endless info on the internet about great dane nutrition.

What a nice pic! Your son and the dog will grow up to be inseperable I am sure. Won't be too long before Mac will be as tall as your son.

It is not just the protein content. It is the total kcals per cup that is the determining factor. Protein along with carbohydrates and fat are what determines total calories in a unit of measure. Also, most large breed puppy foods have glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and MSM added as supplements that are not in many other puppy, maintenance, or low cal diets. These are very good for joint health in growing large breed dogs.
If you have confidence in your veterinarian I know that you will follow his/her advice. As for the internet, just like all the postings on this forum (including mine), they are not always accurate. I realize that I will not change your opinion, nor will you change mine. However, since other people read these forums I would ask them to keep an open mind and get advice from their veterinarian and not from your opinion or mine. I stand by my opinion that good quality large breed puppy foods are safe for giant breed dogs and they are what I suggest to my clients.
If you are serious about feeding a Large Breed puppy food if it contains less than 25% protein as you stated:
1. Innova 24%
2. Nature's Recipe 22%
3. Eagle Pack Holistic 23%
4. Eagle Pack regular 23%
5. Bil jac 24%
All are large breed puppy formulas that can be obtained at local pet food stores or by googling the words 'Pet' 'food' 'direct'. Of the foods mentioned above I would go for Innova. I find that the palitabilty of it appears to be superior to the other three and it is the easiest to find in local pet food stores.
I wish you and your pup a happy and healthy life.

the percentages stated for each food can be verified by finding the internet pet food site that combines the words..'Pet, food and direct' and 'clicking 'on the foods

I want one so bad! i have been debating for 2 years between what dog i should get. Great Dane, flatcoat golden lab, St. Bernard, or Irish setter/ golden lab mix (its basically an auburn Labrador). i cant decide, and these GReat Dane picks are intoxicating! beautiful puppy.
that picture with the baby reminds me of when my brother was 3, and i was 13. he was in a big patch of sand with this couple month old pit-bull. he would start digging sand dog style, and then the dog would follow right up with it. it was so cute. babies and dogs are like peas and carrots.
