green algae

I recently got new lights, which have caused a lot of coraline to grow on my rocks. I have a lot of green to yellow to redish algae growing on my glass, I usually scrap the glass once everyother week when I do a water change. Theres so much of the algae that the water has a green tint to it. Is it okay to let the algae get to this point before scraping it off?? Or should I be scraping everyday?? Thank you.

Generally speaking how often one scraps the glass is determined by personal preference, but I would guess that most people scrap their viewing glass every day (I do, and everyone that has a SW tank that I know personally also does). Nonviewing glass on the otherhand may get cleaned weekly, monthly or never depending on the person (I personally never clean the nonviewing portion of my tanks). So its kind of up to you - if you don't mind not being able to see in your aquarium except for whatever clear spots you can find - once a week is probably fine.
As far as the green stuff - most algae isn't killed by scraping, its simply removed, so it ends up somewhere else in your tank. If that somewhere happens to be a prefilter, or filter pad where the algae can't survive it dies. If you change these often, no problem, if not, organic debris can build up and add to the nutrient levels of your tank. As far a removing them when you scrap them off, without doing a major water change (like probably 50% to syphon them out, which is never recommended in the SW trade) I really don't know how you would go about removing them. You might try sweeping the tank with a fishnet, and that might get some of it, but otherwise I really don't know.
Hope that helps.

it does help a lot thank you. I do change my filter media about every 3 weeks. I think I'm just going to let it grow like you said except on the front of the tank. thanks again!

Cutting down on your lighting period, keep the curtains closed if by a window, reducing feeding to reduce nutrients will all help to keep the algae from growing in the first place.

so the algae on the glass is not good?
Not sure what you are asking here? All saltwater tanks will get some sort of algae, algae film more like it, on the glass. This is unavoidable. Daily use of a magna float to clean it off the glass is the norm.
Turning the water green, because you have allowed the algae to form to such an extent, then scraping it off is not a good thing. It is actually allowing the algae to build up in the pumps, thus helping it to reproduce. In my opinion, I would start a daily routine of using a magna float on the three sides of the tank, and leave the back alone for the grazers.

yeah its the film looking algae that grows on the glass that I was wondering about. I'll do as you suggest, clean the sides and front and let the back grow for the snails. I just bought 25 new margarita snails so they'll help keep things cleaner too.
