i bought one about a week ago and his legs are getting shorter and shorter what is going on he is in a 30 gal. with a flame cardinal,blackfined shrimp goby,peppermint shrimp

they look flat no tappering

How did you go about the acclimating the star to your tank?

i let him float about 10 min and put him in the next day he was lossing bits and peaces of his legs had a white burrowing star do the same before

Well there could easily be your problem...do a board search on starfish acclimitization...that was MUCH to fast. Stars are very sensitive to salinity levels, best of luck in the future.
