Green coraline Algae dominate in tank

Hi everyone this is hard to believe but you know how you look at other people's reef tanks and its all purple coraline algae covering the back of the tank and becoming almost a background? Well for some weird reason half of my glass is green coraline algae on the back with a few spots of purple, when i get my digital camera i'll post pictures here but the color of the coraline algae is not a dark green its kinda like a pale green or yellowish green, and no this is not nuisance algae because its feels and looks like the same thing the purple coraline is made of

Yeah, I got a problem with that green coraline algea, it gets all over the front of the glass, the back. I have to use a razor blade to get it off.

I have had this same thing, although I did not think of it as coraline. It is hard like coraline, but does not seem to encrust off of a single point like coraline. It seems to just be all over the glass, and I do have to scrape it off. Maybe someone else knows more about it and can shed some light on the subject. I am curious about this myself. <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

I have the same thing going on in my tank. The purple started out first, but the green is growing much quicker and is now dominant. Is the green stuff beneficial? Is it a coraline algae?

Yes it is a type of coraline algea and I think it means your tank is healthy but that green stuff is a pain to get off somtimes.

If you want to bump up your pinks and purples just use Marc Weiss' Reef Vital DNA, or any of his stuff for that matter. You'll be surprised at what comes growing out of as well as across your LR!!

Yeah when i worked in an lfs back home we did an experiment, and on one shipment of live rock that was bare from tonga, we put half the rock in a tank that was treated with Reef Dna, and the other half, we let cure regularly. Well teh rock treated with reef DNA cured about a week faster than the other did, and the extar week that it had on the other stuff, the DNA prmoted all kinds of little algaes, bryozooans, and foramniferans to grow, along with coralline algea, and copeopods! It is really great stuff!

Well, don't know about this DNA magic stuff, but I have had greens as well, but they mostly gave way to purples over a 2-month period. I am no expert by any means, but it makes sense to me that coralline can be thought just like bacteria. There are many types of bacteria, and some compete with each other for certain resources. Some also have particular likes/dislikes with certain water chemistries. So whether your coralline comes out as green versus purple probably depends on the existing biodiversity you have in your tank (i.e. do you have both green and purple types of coralline in there already) and the water parameters (probably major stuff and trace elements).
Cheers,

My tank is about 7 months old. I have tons of pink coralline on the rocks, and on the black powerheads. However, the back of the tank only seems to grow green. Maybe it's the dark background that attracts the pink. The back of my tank is light blue and I can't see anything but green growing on it.
