I have a colony of green star polyps that is about 8" long and 5" wide that has not opened for about a week now, I moved them lower in my tank to see if that makes a difference, It don't seem like any parts of it is dying. Is this a common thing?

sometimes if you pull them out the tank, even for a second. it may take up to a week or two to open back up. also if the air temp outside the tank
differs from greatly from the tank they will stay closed longer.
somtimes just moving them in tank will make them close up for a week, just remember the rougher you are ,or if the rock falls often the longer they will take.
i frag my gsp often, and whats odd is that the frags mostly open in a couple
hours, while the main colany takes a couple days( 4 to 7)

Thanks but they where in the same spot and had not been touched or bothered and they closed up for no reason, but as for the temp outside my tank that can change from cold to hot fast or be cold one day and warm the next, ha depends on how much wifie plays with the thermostat, it is -20 C up here now. But what would the temp outside the tank have to do with whats inside the tank, the tank is pretty consistant at 77 F.

Hal000, what kind of fish is that in your avatar? Hunted, have you added any new corals since they have closed? How's your water? You could try a water change, if you can post some pic's.

Iodine. Some people will say you dont need it BUT, I add it when my toad stool starts drroping and my star polyps do not open. They grow like crazy after that. All soft tissue needs Iodine to grow. I can bet I can also bet I have more ring of fires Than anyone on this site. I can also say that I have more zoas than 80% of the people on this site. I started with a 30 polyps and now I have over 2000. With No deaths. I must be doing something right.
Just give it a shoot. You will be happy.

Just a thought how about your cal. and alk levels. I add Iodine to my tank also. My stars like the top of the tank with good water flow over them
. My SG 1.024 and ph 8.4. My water temp is @ 80 degrees. What type of filter are you using? May need to clean filter if you are using a canister. I would also recheck all the levels just to make sure you didn't miss something.
