I was wandering if any one has used the medication for ick called greenex, which is suppose to be safe for inverts, if so does it work, and what affect did it have on your tank.

Funny you should ask because I just purchased some from my LFS. But, I thought I would try garlic first, and luckily the garlic worked so I didn't try the Greenex. The lady at my LFS claims she has used it in her reef with good luck. She said she didn't have any stony corals, but many various soft corals and inverts, and they were fine. She also told me rather than using the recommended dosage as stated on the bottle every other day, she used half the dosage every day. She claims this gave her better results. But, keep in mind, I have no experience with it. That is just what she told me.

Well I didn't have much choice other than try the hyposalinity, and I knew this would kill the inverts, so I am trying the GreenEx, My LFS swears it works, but they have lied before LOL. Thought I would see if anyone here had tried it, I'll keep you posted as to how it goes.

I can see why this GreenX discussion ended up over in the Fish Forum…You guys were hoping that the Disease Mods wouldn’t look over here, right? :D
Well, I won’t say anything….except to note that rat poison also as an X
on its bottle !

Ive used greenex twice... and both times it didnt work. It made the ick look better for a few days, and then it would just come back even worse. This product claims to be reef safe, but it also claims it cures ick :D . Reef tanks do best when they aren't all clogged up with all sorts of chemicals that arent found naturally in the ocean. Point is, if your tryin to cure your ick in a reef. Get a QT/Hospital tank and either use hyposalinity, or copper. :D

I too was told greenex was reef safe and used by my LFS....guess what...they lied. I used 1/10th the dosage reccomended on the bottle and my anemones died within 30 minutes. Mushrooms and polyps closed and remained closed for a couple of days, I thought I had lost them as well. Didn't do anything for the ich problem. Don't Use It IMO I use garlic once a week for prevention

I am using a product called rid-ich which also claims to be reef safe. I have been using it for about 5 days now and it hasn't affected my anemone or coral but I guess I will have to wait and see if it actually works.

GaBoy,
I too have tried GreenEx twice. It didn't work either time. My corals didn't like it....they didn't open all the way until a week or so after my last dosage and it didn't do anything to kill the ick that finally killed all of my fish.
As suggested by a few others.....copper or hyposalinity are the treatments you want to use to defeat an ick infestation.

After using the GreenEx for 4 days, I have lost 80% of my fish, it does not help get rid of Ick, I think it just poisions the fish so they die more quickly. I have moved my inverts to a QT tank, and I am now in the process of trying hypo. which I should have done to start with. I will find another fish store because I think they are not interested in the health of your fish, they are just interested in making a sale, and that is where I bought the fish that introduced ick to my tank to start with. I was stupid for not quarantining the fish to start with, and I have learned a valuable and expensive lesson. If I ever have a problem again, I will follow the message boards, I will not trust another fish store..

note, i don't think you can use copper in your main tank if you have inverts.
i've never heard much good about any chemicals used to treat ick in saltwater fish. i know stuff works for fresh. I've heard best results from hypo. beth and terry can tell you how to cure it (or you can search on the board first).
