gross smell from tank?

my tank is 120 gallons and sump is approx 15 gallons.
my sump was quite dirty,lots of crap on bottom that got stirred up even when I tried to remove sponge bubble traps to clean so I tore it down,scrubbed it and refilled it.
since then there is a strong smell in my apartment that you can even taste!
last time I smelled this same odor I added 10 lbs of live rock that had not cycled enough. the smell lsated a week!
can cleaning sump cause this?

Yes, cleaning the sump can definitely put this kind of odor in the air.

just to clarify,the smell is not from the actual cleaning,it started after the sump was back up and running.

As others have said, run activated carbon.
Until then, put a clothespin over your nose and don't have any lady friends over.
