I moved into a new home that was built about 6 months ago and all my outlets in the kitchen and bathrooms are gfci. The outlet that my tank is plugged into is not , is it just a matter of getting a gfci outlet and changing them out or is it more complicated than that? Also is it better to have the ground probe in the tank or in the sump my. Thanks !!!

You don't have to be plugged directly into a GFCI, just be down the circuit of one. If you get a good surge supressor I don't see why you would have to even use a GFCI. Just make sure the surge suppressor has a breaker that will trip and that you can reset.

GFCI is crucial in my opinion. I surge supressor won't protect you. Like stated above, the GFCI just needs to be in the circuit before your tank. It's not a bad idea to just replace the first outlet in the circuit with GFCI.
You should only need to place the Grounding Probe in the sump but it won't hurt to also have one in the tank.

My tank's circuit did not have a GFCI. I just replaced the existing outlet with one. It's not too diffucult.
The other option is to buy a GFCI pigtail or surge protector with a GFCI.
