Now: (it's a fuzzy pic, but you can get the picture)

This is how you can tell your panther grouper is maturing. When small they are GORGEOUS...they go from a BRIGHT WHITE with JET BLACK polka dots to blah, drab, grey with black spots. No offense to all u people with panthers, but I honestly only like then when VERY small while still bright white with jet black dots.

Yeah, that last's about 6 weeks...

Best bet is to just look at them and leave them at the LFS then....

My panther hasn't grown that much since I got him. He's MAYBE gotten about a 1/2 inch longer, but he's still very small. Could water quality be the culprit sometimes? I have had high nitrates for a long time, and it doesn't bother the fish, but could it be causing him to be darker?

How long have you had it? The panther I had (sold it to keep smaller fish) started off at 1.5" when I got it and reached 8" ~18 months later. My system was loaded with nitrates, so I doubt that's a culprit.

Panther groupers amaze me, not by the way they look but they way they grow. I have seen a 2in panther grouper and in another tank a 18incher! Let me just say WOW, how can a munchkin get that big!?

hahaha. whenever i go to my LFS, if my mom comes, she always comments on howcute the panther groupers are and how she things i should get one. she must have a short term memory because she almost drops to the floor ever time i tell her how big they get.
